Coyotes at Midnight in Brampton

by Maureen
(Brampton, Ontario, Canada)

I had put my two dogs out at approximately 12:30 am this past week in Brampton.

My backyard is adjacent to a ditch / ravine. I heard a shrill bark from my littlest dog (tiny Toy Poodle) and I looked out in the backyard and saw two Coyotes pacing along the fence.

I reacted instantly and ran out to scoop up the littlest dog in my arms and secure the larger Poodle.

I stood in amazement watching these two creatures. They did not leave right away. Then they departed by going down into the ditch / ravine.

Had it not been for the fearless bark of my little dog, they may have jumped the fence (5 foot chain-link) to take down the dogs.

I'm so glad that you were there to rescue your little dogs!

A 5" fence would probably not have kept a hungry Coyote out!

Coyote Family of 4
by: Anonymous

For about 1 week now, our street Paul William Gate and Swennen, have seen a family of 4 coyotes around 7:30 pm until 6:00 am ...they are so brave and come right up to our driveways and hide near or under cars until the morning, why are they coming so close? I think people need to do their part - not litter and close the lock on the compost bins. It's scary for us who own dogs especially a small one like mine. The city should send out notices to us all, some are oblivious to what they are and think they are dogs.

I let my dog out in our backyard (opening to a ravine) to pee at 6:00am, I kept monitoring from the door when he started barking. When I went to check what he was barking at I saw two big dogs It took me a couple of seconds to realize, they were coyotes. They were big, very similar to German Shepherds or Huskies. I started yelling at my dog to stop barking, secured him and came inside the house. This is my first time seeing coyotes since we moved in almost 4 years

I let my dog out (Anatolian Shepherd) around 11:00 PM into the yard as per usual and I heard him barking unlike his normal "squirrel" bark and when I came to the door he was face to face with two large coyotes. I’ve see plenty of coyotes before but these two were larger and the coats were darker. They didn’t flee away but rather walked away while keeping an eye on myself and my dog. I didn’t think coy wolves were this far south but from what I’ve read here I’m guessing I may be wrong..

Two coyotes approached me and my Bullmastiff in the Jefferson/Jordan Park area. We initially heard dogs yelping in the distance followed by howling, but did not think much of it initially. Suddenly I saw two big looking "dogs" that I just thought were off leash. However when they came within 30 metres I realized they were Coyotes. I yelled and screamed and they got nervous and scurried away but did not fully flee. My dog and I quickly walked away as soon as possible.

My senior cat Butter never came in from his morning constitutional 6 days ago, Nov 8. This morning I found out that a neighbour's cat from 3 doors away has been missing for 2 days. This area is bounded by McKay, North Park, Manorcrest. I have seen coyotes in the area - on the path and on North Park but this was daytime and Butter stayed in the backyards or on the street at my house or the street behind. As a senior, he stayed close to home and would not have gone into the woods, the field, etc.

Parr Lake, Vodden St. E. @ Laurelcrest
by: Resident

On January 5th, I was walking my dog around Parr Lake south when I noticed something large and dark against the snow. When I shone my flashlight on the shadow it turned out to be a large Coy-Wolf, 75 pounds or larger which took off towards the woods. When I approached the spot where I first noticed the beast, I found a freshly killed duck missing it’s head. The body/blood was still steaming meaning it was a fresh kill. The ducks that congregate in the open water near the lakes inflow have always attracted Coy-Wolves every winter however this is the earliest during winter I have seen them around the lake. The following morning nothing remained of the duck but the blood and a few feathers.
In October I found parts of a goose, bones and feathers near the lake but did not make the connection. Anyone who walks their dogs at night in the Bramalea Woods neighbourhood should take precautions. My 500 luminaries flashlight was bright enough to scare the animal away however a pack may be emboldened and less likely to scare. Animal control have been notified.

Creditview and Queen - Multiple Packs
by: Anonymous

I have just moved to Creditview Road north of Queen. We have an acre that has a small stream in the back yard. We have heard Coyotes howling almost every night. Not one or two, at least 10 and not just one pack. I hear one at the front of the house and at least two at the back. We have two larger hunting dogs, but have blocked off a small night area with an 8 ft fence. Even then I go out with them and keep a bat and pepper spray handy. In the morning my dogs go crazy running around the property sniffing. I even go out with them during the day. They have already tangled with one in the Rouge last year and we were lucky neither dog was hurt. Maybe because they fought it together and both are over eighty pounds. I have worked with dogs and Wolves and find these hybrids to be more aggressive and conniving than either of them. They have the pack mentality of a Wolf but the are more aggressive than either a Wolf or Coyotes.

Lost cat
by: Kiran

We are missing our indoor pet cat that was occasionally let out in the evening in our back yard (big lots of an estate home). We had her at 7:00 PM and we came in at about that time and started calling her at 9:00 PM. Other times she came in with our first call but on 17th September 2016 she was gone forever. We found little smear of blood and two very tiny hair clippings. Where can our pet go other than a Coyote- any idea if this scenario sounds usual??

Sadly, yours is not the only cat to have been taken by Coyotes, and I am so very sorry that she is gone.

Some defence is better than no defence
by: Michele H. in Toronto

We had two close encounters with Coyotes within the last few years in North York, Ontario (Black Creek/Lawrence Avenue West area) while walking our toy poodle. We were always very aware of their potential presence. My friend who works at Canadian Tire bought a "Coyote/Wolf Pepper Spray Repellent" there and carries it with him every time we walk our boy. The cost is about $20. It's worth a try and better than nothing.

I heard a bunch of Coyotes howling then it sounded like yelps from a dog. Hope it was just them making the noise, but worried for the dogs in the hood as one was killed in the area. Sounded like a pack with all the howls. They travel along the creek to my understanding. Don't want them moved or exterminated just wonder if it's legal to carry something to protect yourself from them as I heard carrying anything for self defense is illegal in Ontario which in my opinion is ridiculous.

Like every day I take my two dogs to pick up mail. Our mail box in on Mississauga and north of Queen. If I didn't stop to talk to my neighbours I would have been at my mail box same time as coyote. I've never seen them in the afternoon but because my dogs are 16 lb and small I got scared and turned back home. My dogs are never outside after dark they use training pads after dark at home. It's crazy to think like that but it's not right to be scared and no one will do anything to protect human or dogs from these wild animals.

As we sprinted to the end of our street (new development) my dog started to panic. I stopped and listened and I heard lots of howls. All the dogs in my neighbourhood starting barking. I listened for a little bit longer and heard a howl that sounded like it was nearby. I turned and sprinted with my dog back home. What worries me is that the howls sounded like they were very close.

I am so sad to hear of the recent Coyote attack on little Oliver. The fact is that Coyotes are getting braver and we are now seeing more sightings of them due to all the new housing development that has invaded their living space. I've been living in a new development surrounded by forest and for the past two years, I have witnessed four sightings of Coyotes in my area. I have a small dog and am becoming increasingly aware that Coyotes are now posing a real danger everywhere. Even though my backyard now is enclosed with 6 ft fence, I will no longer be letting out my small dog before looking outside thoroughly.

Financial / Steeles Sighting

Tonight at around 9:00 pm my Mom had let our dog out in the backyard to pee. I was in the basement and heard her screaming at the top of her lungs. I ran up the stairs only to find our dog barking at a Coyote on the other side of our chain link fence. I quickly ran out and attempted to scream and "shoo" the Coyote away. Surprisingly and thankfully, moving my arms around and shouting seemed to do the trick and as I approached my dog the Coyote moved along. I scooped the dog up and brought him in. I attempted to take the dog out to the front yard (on a leash of course) so he could do his business, however I find myself even scared to do that, as it is my understanding that there have been a couple of attacks on humans in the area, as well as attacks on dogs who have been on leashes! My pup clearly doesn't understand how this could have ended as he keeps ringing the bells to go back outside to try and find him! We'll be taking him out in the yard on a leash from now on. Be careful! It breaks my heart to hear of all these pet attacks and passings :(

Coyotes at Midnight
by: Maureen

Thank goodness your little girl is alive. She is extremely lucky. My little dog is about the same size. These animals are very cunning and dupe the dogs to chase them or "play' with them before they snatch them. People just need to keep their cats inside and be very careful with the knowledge that these Coywolves are out there and are becoming very brazen. When the incident happened here with my dogs, almost three years ago this February, the Brampton Guardian was not interested in running an article about it. The response was, we know we have Coyotes in Brampton. As a result, I found this website and told my story. It's unfortunate that countless animals and people have been attacked in the meantime. I had lived in Brampton over 30 years and had never seen one before. That is why I was concerned. Now these clever animals are increasingly living in urban areas where there are no threats to their existence and there is lots of food. In the rural areas, people have shot guns to help keep them from attacking livestock. We can't do that in the city. Since my little guy was almost attacked, I always go out with the two dogs in the yard. I learned my lesson that day. And when I walk them, I am always on the look out. I think knowledge and vigilance is key.

Financial Drive / Steeles Coyote attack
by: Anonymous

Financial Drive / Steeles: 2nd week of September around 5:30 am, my doggie was anxious and needed to pee, so I let her out on the front (our backyard is not fenced) to do her thing, which she normally does and comes right back to me waiting on the steps. Just as she turned to come back to me she noticed something behind my vehicle on the driveway and started barking. She ran after this thing, which I thought was a huge dog that looked more like a Wolf before I connected the dots and realized it was a Coyote. She chased the Coyote to the end of the road where the Coyote stopped running, turned around and attacked her. My screams awakened my daughter, she came running out just in time to scoop up the dog who was now limping back to us, clearly very hurt. A huge gash in her head, a puncture wound in her neck - over $1000 at the vet, stitches etc. At least our little dog is still alive - she is less than 10 lbs and this Coyote was huge ..... miracle of miracles.

Last January at midnight, lights were out in the house, I stood at the kitchen patio doors looking out into the back yard before going to bed, and a Coyote came up the side of the yard onto the deck, walked across the deck & down the other side of the yard & disappeared, presumably to the ravine which borders Peel Village Golf course. I had a large dog at the time (now deceased) and presumably the coyote was tracking it. However, my dog NEVER went outside alone after our small dog was killed by coyotes Sept 2012. I emailed a local city councilor & animal control, but received only the usual responses.

Pack of Coyotes or Coywolves?

I was taking my lab for a walk in the ravine close to York University. It was quite late but we've walked there hundreds of times. All of a sudden I spotted one, two, three.... there where at least 8 - 10 in the pack. I had a walking stick but feared for my dog's life. I decided to turn and burn. Every 200 feet or so I turned and swung the stick, yelled, but it only seemed to engage them. I ran up the steep hill leading to the road thinking they would not follow but they did. They chased us for, I would estimate, 4 km all they way back to our house. Just a word of advice to all who read this. Just because you haven't seen them doesn't mean there not here.

I am the original person who posted the sighting of the two coy wolves behind my yard a year ago last Feb. These are actually coyotes crossed with wolves, thus known as "Coy-Wolves". That's why they are bigger than the traditional coyotes(from the SW USA). It is believed that the coyotes have bred with the wolves up in Algonquin Park and have migrated south. And it is also believed that they follow railway tracks. People do need to be very careful as it is now well known that they are living amongst us in urban areas, thus especially putting our pets at risk! A number of them could easily do some very serious damage to even a larger dog such as a German Shepherd, not to mention how they kill smaller/medium sized dogs and cats. We are NOT over reacting! Keep alert and be cautious out there!!!

Around 2 am, I heard Coyotes (I think) howling during the night as they ran down a street. I believe they are Coyotes, not dogs, from their high-pitched howls. I would assume there is at least 3 - 5 in the pack. I would typically hear them 2 - 3 times a week, only late at night. There is a environment conservation site near the area which is noted to have Coyotes.

Coyote this morning against our fence in Fletcher's Creek
by: Rob

A Coyote was outside our 4 foot chain link fence this morning (May 1, 2013) and our Jack Russell terrier went straight at the fence trying to get to the Coyote. My wife ran out and scared it away but I fear it is stalking our dog. Police say there is nothing they can do.

I'd suggest that you don't let your dog out by itself, make sure you are always outside when he is

3 large coyotes (if not wolves) in Castlemore
by: Anonymous

March 5, 2013 2:00am

I was up late studying and around 2:00am I heard nonstop chaotic howling and whining - I immediately ran to my facing out toward where my Rottweiler/German Shepard can be seen. Normally he has a strong and deep bark, but now he was whimpering and calling for help.

I saw him at first approach forward toward what I assumed was a neighbour's dog, but then begin to back into a corner as another jumped out of the shadows, only to be followed by another! My dog weighs about 70 lbs and looked tiny compared to these long-legged creatures! They were standing in a semi-circle slowly coming in toward my terrified dog. My mom heard all the noise as well and came running down. We started banging on the windows and cracked one open to yell and also reassure my dog we were now here and to keep away from them. My mom then opened a side door and waved a stick while yelling and they slowly began to run away.

it seems the initial howling I heard may have been a call to the pack by that one initial coyote!!! I can't think of any possible explanation but that they're intent must have been to prey on my dog and that terrifies me!!! I'd call animal control, but I don't feel like they'd do anything!

We live in a very spacious lot without any real fencing, and my dog stays outdoors on an extended leash. We've had him for 9 years and this has never happened before, and now I'm reading all these stories and sightings!

Coyotes in Heart Lake
by: Anonymous

Last week, I saw two big Coyotes by Wanless Drive and Ching. They crossed from the houses and into a field. Tonight, I came outside and heard a pack going off. They were in the forest by my house. Howling and yipping so loudly.

Coyotes - Riverstone Golf and Country Club
by: Anonymous

Since we moved to our house three years ago, we have heard and seen Coyotes many times at night as we back onto green space over looking the West Humber River. To date, they have kept their distance however when I took my two dogs (one very large, one small) for a walk tonight at 7:30 p.m., I was literally startled when I crossed paths with a pair of coyotes next to our fence line. My large dog immediately barked which caused the Coyotes to back away about 40'. They stopped at that distance and I was quite surprised that they then stayed their ground despite me also yelling and waiving my arms to scare them away. Although they weren't aggressive with us, their lack of fear will make me hesitant to walk our small dog at night without being accompanied by our large dog.

Coyotes in Brampton
by: Maureen

I do keep a very close watch on my little guys. I have since that day last February. I always go out with them when I let them out in the backyard.
And in the summer, my littlest one who is fearless, gave chase to a Coyote along a creek behind Chris Gibson Park! That won't happen again as I never walk them near any water now. I know that is where they often reside. And I do not walk them at night now either. I was just sick when I heard the little Sheltie was killed in its own backyard where the Coyote was lying in wait in September. That was not too far from where I live.

k9 remains?
by: Anonymous

I was walking my dogs on Wednesday afternoon at Peel Village Golf Course and found what appeared to be a canine lower jaw. It looked fairly fresh, but there were no other remains.
Very sorry to hear that dogs are being taken. Coyotes are very intelligent and will learn patterns. Keep a close eye on your doggies.

Tragic Loss
by: Maureen

I am very sorry to hear about this terrible incident and the loss of your little dog. I came very close to losing my precious little guy last February. That is why I posted my story. When I called the Brampton Guardian, they weren't interested as they said they were aware that Brampton had Coyotes.

Maybe, the Guardian would be interested now and publish an article in light of your terrible loss. It would be worth trying to contact them to help warn others.

Sorry for your loss,

Maureen

Coyotes in Peel Village Golf Course, Brampton
by: Anonymous

Our little dog was killed last night by a pack of coyotes. We live on the ravine bordering the golf course. Everyone who reads this, please take extra care with your pets - never let them out alone, even in your own backyard, at any time of day.

Oh no, I am so sorry - thank you for warning other people, you have probably saved the life of someone's pet today!

It was just before dusk (forested area within the city of Brampton, Ontario) and I encountered a group of Coyotes that were no more than 20 to 30 feet away, suddenly howling and yipping.

I just stood in the forest near a creek after finding someones sunglasses on the ground and thought - I just want to get a good picture! I walked back out on the open trail and backtracked hoping to find them and snap a pic ... but they were nowhere to be found.

I would not do this without knowing it's best not to run away but stand your ground if you need to - and yell at them to scare them off.

Everyone should carry a personal alarm if travelling in the woods alone. July 29, 2012

White Spruce
by: Anonymous

Many sightings in and around White Spruce Park in Brampton.

Coyotes have jumped into several backyards after pets and have approached people on the park pathways at 0800, noon and 1930 hrs.

In one instance, the Coyote went up on the deck and looked in the window.

Signs that have been posted give people a false sense of security. They are not dusk to dawn animals any more. They are not afraid of people and tend to stand their ground.

Do not leave dogs, no matter what size, in your fenced yard alone. My concern is that a child will be approached next.

Coyotes in Brampton, Ontario
by: Anonymous

We live right on the forest of White Spruce in Brampton... both our neighbours and our family own multiple dogs (and large dogs for the most part)... there have been probably over 5 instances of them (Coyotes) jumping the back fence in the past 6 months (4 foot chain link) to try and go after the dogs, but we have always been aware and scared them away after shrieking and running to the back fence.

There have also been multiple times where they are pacing the fence or are watching from the woods and we go right to the back fence and they are not even scared away unless you start banging a hockey stick (our protection) against a tree...

Scary lil buggers they are!

Toronto (North York) Coyotes
by: Michele

On May 2, 20212, around 11:30 p.m. while walking our toy poodle, my friend noticed a lone Coyote walking at a steady pace south-bound along Black Creek Drive just north of Lawrence Avenue.

It was quite eery and scary but a wondrous sight to actually encounter this canine in Toronto after all the years living here and never seeing any larger than a red fox.

Obviously it was on the scent of prey as north-bound traffic did not deter nor intimidate it.

As we were watching with piqued interest, it disappeared up an embankment at a bridge where we cross on our walks.

Needless-to-say our senses were heightened as we became acutely aware of a possible attack when we crossed.

Ever since, we have been on the lookout.

Our poodle is the half-brother of the two poodles in Brampton.

Coyotes in Brampton
by: Tom

Saw two coyotes in woods in back of my yard, which borders Vivian's Woods in Brampton, Ontario, about 6:30 am. February 21, 2012.

They were also next to 4 foot chain link fence.

They looked right at me and left slowly as I got my two small dogs into the house.

Have heard them howling every night since.

Coyotes in Newmarket also.
by: Samjtwinn

They are moving in closer to people in Newmarket as well.... we should all be more vigilant. I'm glad things turned out well for you Ms. Maureen.
