Coyote in Ajax

by Paul
(Ajax, Ontario, Canada)

Out walking my dog near Ajax hospital and we were followed by a Coyote who was waiting in Clements wood lot, Clements Road.

We were no more than 10-15 feet from him, then he slowly followed us toward the Ajax hospital, very similar looking to the pics in your article.

Coyotes in north Ajax
by: Anonymous

My husband was walking home from work at 2:00 am and he saw 2 coyotes on Old Harwood Ave, they started following him. He made loud noises trying to scare them away and the just kept following him. Finally a motorcycle came by and scared them away. Then a week later he was riding his bike home about the same time and there was a coyote in front of the mailbox just a few houses down on our street Willcocks Cres.

Three Coyotes
by: Barb

Last night (2/16/2918) we had three large coyotes come up to about 5’ from our back fence at home. We live on the naturalized greenbelt behind Bramwell Acres, running between Westney Road and Rotherglen Road. (Westney, hwy2). I’m wondering if I should call animal control. This is too close for comfort!

Yes, I'd call them, they may not do anything, but they may have some advice for you.

Castle Fields

Saw a coyote running down the street in Castle Fields which is right off of Salem and Rossland. It happened at approximately 2 am. This is the 3rd time I have seen them around my neighborhood in the span of 2 months. Each time it was a single coyote and they seem to be coming out around 2-3 am.

Coyotes in North Pickering
by: Anonymous

Saw a pack of Coyotes on Taunton west of Whites Road. They are quite fearless of humans as I parked my car on the side as they walked by. This tells me if you were walking your dog, they would attack and kill, with you standing no chance.

Luckily, Coyote attacks on humans are extremely rare, although attacks on pets do happen, especially in areas with high populations of Coyotes.

About half an hour ago (10:00 pm) I was watching TV and heard howling, really loud. Multiple sources, must have been a pack and they were probably close to come across so clearly. Our backyard backs onto creek/wood lot.

Coyotes in South Ajax
by: Anonymous

I live in a South Ajax. My cat was taken from my front yard and killed by a Coyote July 22, 2014. Coyote kills in this area are daily occurrences. A coyote doesn't know the difference between a rabbit, dog or cat. After killing their prey, Coyotes may bury and hide their kill until they feel it is safe to eat it. Coyotes in this area tend to take their kills to Kinsmen Park in South Ajax to feed. This park has looked like a pet cemetery for several months. Coyotes are usually spotted in this area from 5:00 - 8:00 am but have been seen in plain view at this park as early as 4:00 pm in the afternoon. This is a park where children play and it is located very close to a school yard where these same Kinsmen Park Coyotes have also been known to frequent.

There are between 4 - 7 coyotes that currently hunt in the Harwood/Dreyer Kinsmen Park vicinity. Female coyotes will hunt within a 5km radius. Males will hunt within a 40 km radius.

This week, the week of October 6, 2014 coyotes were reported in Kinsmen Park four times. One of my neighbours witnessed one coyote feeding on a small deer.

While walking my dog this weekend I discovered a deer leg and a small pink flea collar in the park. It is very important that South Ajax residents not leave their small children or pets unattended and take extra precaution when venturing outdoors.

There are more and more reports that some people
in this area have been followed by coyotes while walking walking their dogs.

Please report any coyote sightings or findings to @roundabit #ajaxcoyotewatch

Be safe.

Animals are a part of the family.

Coyotes - two of them were seen with something black in their mouth close to our home on Bryant Road, south Ajax. It was most likely our cat. We haven't seen our cat since someone told us this morning that he had seen this. Also, I know someone had phoned the town about the coyotes, but the town had told them they can't do anything. Maybe something will be done when a child gets hurt? Then really it is too late. Animals are a part of the family too !!

Spotted a Coyote crossing Harwood Ave, north of the 401, by the convenience store and used car lot. Drove back to take another look. It then turned around, ran back across the street and disappeared onto Doric Street.

Salem & Taunton
by: Jen

We live in the North End of the city. North of Taunton on Salem. Have lived here 17 years and always seen and heard packs of Coyotes on our property. They howl in the wee hours. Tonight I've heard them about four times howling. Tonight they sound like they have A LOT of babies with their pack. I assume they're getting to be a big pack. I looked out the window just now to see them running through the back of the property.

South Ajax Coyote

I was driving near Pickering beach, (close the Ajax hospital) and saw a beautiful golden Coyote causally walking along the street. I wanted to capture a picture but sadly I didn't get my phone out on time. They truly are beautiful creatures, but I'm concerned about the amount of children & adults that walk around this area, especially earlier in the morning. I literally saw a teenaged boy walking his little dog on the next road. (I hope those Coyotes are actually nice to us humans & our pets) :$
I would like to hope so too, but it is more likely that they see small pets as food.

Coyotes at waterfront in Ajax
by: Gail

I live in the south end of Ajax and frequent the waterfront 2-3 times a day year round. Saw the coyotes (two of them) a couple of weeks ago. I am used to seeing them (or sometimes one) on a regular basis over the past 10 months and I have some awesome photos of them. I have been quite close to them on numerous occasions (within 10 feet) with my dog (Australian Shepherd) and really don't feel that they are a major concern. They have never been interested in either me or my dog...my dog seems to just ignore them. I really wish people would educate themselves about coyotes in urban areas and armed with this knowledge try to live peacefully side by side with these beautiful animals. I will add the howling at dusk (sometimes in response to sirens) does make my dog uncomfortable, other than that we seem to co-exist quite comfortably.

Wild Coyote

My father walks our dog every single morning, in the waterfront area, in Ajax and when he comes back home every time he has stories about Coyotes. Very scary! We pay taxes to enjoy our parks and it looks like we can not go for long walks with our dogs without looking over our shoulders. Very Sad.

Extra caution should be taken when walking your dogs, especially at dawn or dusk, but sadly we have build our towns and cities where these animals live - too bad that we pay taxes, but we can hardly ask the animals to move!

Coyote Crosses Rotherglen Road South
by: Anonymous

Just driving north on Rotherglen Road towards Highway #2 this morning at 7:40am Tuesday November 13, and a very large Coyote crossed the road in front of me and headed south east along Mills Creek passing behind Burningham Crescent. To all walking this beautiful green space, please keep an eye out as it really blends into the surroundings.

I encountered two Coyotes last night while walking the dog in the Clements wood lot. I first saw one on the pathway which slowly followed us and we quickly left the area. After detouring on Clements, two of them emerged which made me walk very quickly home
