What is this unusual bird in my yard?

by Sherry
(London, Ontario, Canada )

Hi there,

I caught a picture of this bird this morning just before he took flight.

We live in urban Ontario in a townhouse style condo.

My kids first saw him about a month ago as he was feeding on a small animal in our back yard.

He is so small I thought it was a pigeon.

But this bird was definitely eating another animal. It seems way too small to be a hawk (?)

We do have Peregrine Falcons in London.

Is it possible this is one of them?

Perhaps one of our readers will be able to identify this bird, thanks for sending it to us!

Your bird looks like

A juvenile Red Tail Hawk.

I believe by the white spots on the back of this bird you have a great picture of a possible young Red Tailed Hawk and in your picture I see signs of the distinguishable red tail.
