For some reason I looked up and there he was, a meter over my head!

Hello Bill, let me start off by saying this is an amazing close-up of this owl. I frequent this area quite a bit and have been blessed to see a lot of wildlife from Pileated Woodpeckers to a very big Buck walking through the treeline, from the size and markings I am fairly certain this looks like A Barred Owl. I hope this helps.
