Niagara Peninsula Wolves

by James, Maureen
(Chippewa, Niagara, Welland, Caistor Centre Road area)

James reported seeing a black and grey Wolf in Chippewa ... I saw two Wolves last week, when traveling Fort Erie bound on the QEW just before Lions Creek Road. On the Niagara Falls side of the highway there is always a big buck in a field so I looked that direction to see if I could see him. Instead I saw a black and a grey Wolf standing in the same spot that I always see the deer. Not sure if they downed him, but I have not seen him since. Yesterday I traveled by and saw a small herd of deer in the same area.

One of our readers says ... Many people around don't believe that wolves are around Niagara. About three years ago I was up by Brock, and instead of turning to head down the hill, I decided to take the scenic route and turned towards Decew Falls. As I turned onto Merritville highway, just past the parking lot, I could see something coming up from the creek, so I pulled over (along with another car). We watched as a huge blonde Wolf came up onto the road, crossed and walked off into the woods and towards the university. It was not a Coyote, it was not a pet, it was not a coy-wolf, it was a Wolf no doubt at all. It was amazing and huge, I tried to take a photo but my phone couldn't catch it. My husband had also seen a Wolf not far from that spot.

Maureen from Welland said ... I was on my way home tonight and on the corner of Webber Road and South Pelham Road, I saw a thing that looked like a Wolf, it was much too big to be a Coyote, so i was a little freaked out. There was no way it was a dog, it was just way too big to be a dog - this thing was HUGE. I have never been more terrified. Considering its two blocks from my house, and I have pets that go outside alone all day.

Another one of our readers wrote ... its funny that I found this. I thought my friends were seeing things. Last December near Caistor Center Road they were coming to my house on Range Road but made a wrong turn. They first thought it was a black bear walking on the side of the road. As they came beside it they slowed down and said it was definitely a black wolf. They said its back was as high as the hood.
