Merlin in Fort Erie?

by Shannon
(Fort Erie, Ontario, Canada)

Shannon, one of our readers from Fort Erie sent us this question - Earlier today I was in the Walmart parking lot in Fort Erie, Ontario, when I saw a bird that was obviously a bird of prey.

It swooped down into the dirt compound and ran under a skid of dirt to catch a mouse.

It looked like a Merlin, but I was looking on the internet and they aren't located in the area. Is it possible for them to be in the area?

I'm not sure if it would be a Merlin in the Fort Erie area, perhaps one of our readers would know.

In response to possible Merlin sighting.

Hi Shannon, your sighting was possibly an Merlin and yes they are in the Niagara, Ontario area, they also sometimes frequent different locations in Ontario, and Southern Ontario. You probably observed a Prairie Merlin. Did you notice any features that may have stood out to you? It may help in further identifying what species you had seen.
