I saw a Coyote in Oakville ,Ontario

by Rudy Besser
(Oakville, Onatrio)

Rudy, one of our readers from Oakville, sent us this report of a Coyote sighting - On Tuesday 20th April 2010, I was walking my two dogs when I saw a Coyote within ten yards of us. The Coyote crossed the road and looked at us and just kept walking. It continued to walk into the trails and bushes. This animal definitely scared me.

This area is approximately 25-30 years old and I have walked my dogs for years and have never seen one, it was between 11:30 pm and 11:45 pm. The area is fully residential but has many trails. I must admit it was scary because I thought it would attack but it just kept walking, not running. The area is between Nottinghill Gate and the Third Line Road in Oakville.

I guess the Coyotes are starting to come south from the Milton, Ontario, area.

Coyote seen in broad daylight as students walk home from school
by: Anonymous

November 20, 2015 - We have seen a Coyote in South East Oakville in the vicinity of Wedgwood and also on Lakeshore Road, for a week now at approximately 3 pm every day when students get out of school. He does not appear to be scared of cars or people. He seems to be making his way to the Lake.

Heard a pack of coyotes in the ravine by Trafalgar and Upper Middle. Be very careful with small dogs; we went out with neighbours to check it out because they were so loud.

I just saw one in our front yard...located at Lakeshore Road and Morden. I thought at first it was a dog but quickly realized it was a Coyote.

It appeared to be looking for food, it was around the area for about half an hour.

Just a Matter of Time
by: Anonymous

With all the Coyote sightings over the past few weeks there is an increased risk of a potential dangerous or even deadly encounter.

The one I saw was in the St. Bernadette school yard and very bold. This Coyote was easily the size of a large German Shepherd. It was shaggy, grey, and skinny portraying its extreme hunger. Considering, a Coyote has already leaped over a black backyard chain link fence nipping a young girl and another killing a small dog while the owner has to watch in horror this is a major concern.

Most coyotes in Southern Ontario are hybrids - Half WOLF. These animals are large, hungry, and could easily take out a child and not to mention a small adult. People need to know about this and something needs to be done.

I am worried someone will get hurt.

Tuesday Jan. 17, 2012 at 4:30 p.m. was walking 22 lb dog and a Coyote was crossing Monk's Passage around Old Carriage Way. Fortunately the Coyote didn't see us and headed back into the trail where people and their dogs walk often.

Learn To Live With Them
by: Anonymous

You don't need to be afraid of coyotes. They have lived in Oakville, Ontario, for years. They don't attack people. They eat mostly mice, rats and rabbits although cats left to roam will be considered fair game.

Predators are needed to keep prey species like rabbits under control. When the fox and coyote populations were lowered during a mange epidemic a few years ago the rodent and rabbit population in Oakville became out of control. They ate hundreds of dollars of shrubs in our backyard and destroyed newly planted trees in Oakville's parks.

Coyotes have their place in our urban ecosystem and are here to stay. We need to learn to live with them.

bold coyote in Oakville
by: Anonymous

This happened July 14th at 8:30 am, in Oakville, Upper Middle and Bishops gate near the condominiums.

Bishops gate and Uppermiddle, Oakville, South west side. My friend Ivan witnessed a Coyote stalking a young boy, this is what he saw.
My friend was waiting for the light north of Upper middle on Bloomfield to cross to Bishops Gate on the south. Himself and two workers were in a pick up truck when they saw a large shaggy Coyote cross from the east side if Bishops gate to the west near the biking/walking path.
They then saw a young boy walking on the path that runs along here, he was walking west with headphones on, and playing a hand held video game. The coyote also saw him, the coyote moved close to the fence that runs just north of the condos here, it moved along the fence very stealthily and caught up to the boy. My friend said the coyote barely moved as it occasionally glanced over at the boy to ensure he was not detected, he had no idea the Coyote was there.
As they approached the area were the brush starts up again and the path continues into it, the coyote crouched low to the ground, to remain undetected, but still moving along the fence and just when he knew the boy could not see him quickly moved into the long grass at the start of the brush completely hidden, waiting to ambush the boy, my friends were yelling and screaming but due to the headphones the youth could not hear them.
Just as the boy was about to enter the brush, he changed his mind and headed right, up the hill towards the road, the coyote picked his head up looked, but never followed, then headed into the brush towards the TD bank and creek area.
My friend said this coyote was as bigger than a German Shepherd, just be careful around here, as I'm sure he'll be back.
He said it was very scary.

Scary and ugly
by: Coyote hater

Just saw one on a boiling hot day, time aprox 12:30 in the afternoon, crossing Third Line about 2 blocks north of Upper Middle.

I saw what I thought was a large dog on the island when it just jumped out in front of my car and crossed the road leading into a small path.

First time seeing one and I must admit its a very ugly looking animal.

Im a huge animal lover, but as a owner of one chocolate and one goldan lab, I really wish something could be done about the Coyote population as they're becoming more desperate for food by coming into busy populated areas and doing it in day light.

They're a treat to my two dogs and two children and anyone else who crosses their path when they're hungry. Over the year they've attacked several mid-large size dogs in Oakville and even more cats as reported by the Oakville Beaver.

I understand, without Coyotes we'd have plenty more Raccoons and other animals, but I must say I liked Coyotes a lot better when they mostly died away a few years back, from the mange that depleted their population.

We watched a Coyote stroll along our backyard property line at about 7.15am on May 12th, 2011.

Fortuantely both our dogs stood stock still and didn't make a sound.

The coyote was there and gone silently - like a ghost...

Coyote in Munn's Creek trail
by: MCT

April 25th 2011; Coyote spotted walking though Munn's Creek trail (Upper Middle & Elm Road) on the west side of the ravine at around 7pm.

We were watching a Raccoon in the backyard (strange that it was out in daylight as well) when it hustled up a tree.

I saw what I thought was a dog without an owner walking through the trail but when it came close to our backyard we could easily see it was a Coyote.

Beautiful looking animal in good shape.

I saw one a few years back around midnight with a rabbit in its mouth in the same area.

Coyote in South Burlington and Bronte Creek Park
by: Anonymous

My neighbour saw a Coyote on three different evenings within the last week.

We live in the Shoreacres area. It has been seen near the creek / ravine area as well as in residential yards.

Yesterday I saw two Coyotes around 10:00 am in a field at Bronte Creek Park. I was surprised to see them during the day.

Wildlife control was contacted, but they are unable to do anything about it, but advised folks to keep their cats indoors.

Coyotes
by: Ian

I live near White Oaks high school. i have seen many here in the last couple of weeks. Since the development of Sixteen mile creek area.

You can not elimanate cCyotes if you kill one, three will move in to try to claim the territory, or they will have larger litters to compensate.

Hhumans are their only natural enemies.

Unfortunately they want small animals cats dogs etc., and if you let your animal out alone, they will stalk it for a couple of days to see the best time to snatch it.

If you have a small dog and are walking it, pick it up if you see a Coyote, you would not want to play tug of war with your dog would you?

They were here first, and long after we have wiped out this planet they will still be here.

I was out for a casual strole with my dog (King Charles Cavalier) in our community of Bronte Creek on the nature paths south of Richview Blvd. The coyote came right up on the path approximately 50 ft in front us. The coyote spotted us, ran down the ravine, and then back up. We quickly took off!
Prior to this I saw a coyote run across the street in broad daylight from the north side of Richview to the south side through the green space. Can anything be done about this???? All around February 2011.

Coyote - New Year's Eve
by: Anonymous

We took our 3 kids and dog out for a walk on New Year's Eve when my husband saw a Coyote on the neighbours lawn about 3 house down (Third Line/Abbeywood Area).

We crossed the street, thinking it might slink away, it did not, but kept coming along the front of our yards.

We had discovered a dead rabbit on our lawn earlier in the day, and the Coyote seemed to be heading to that.

We were taken aback by how brazen it acted !

I was followed by two very large and skinny Coyotes on a trail around 7:00 p.m. in December.

They continued to follow me and my two small dogs, even after yelling and waving my arms.

I had to run to exit the trail further down the path.

This was on the south side of West Oak Trails and Blackbird Court.

I just saw a Coyote, on Monks Passage, just north of Nottinghill Gate. It was around 3:45pm - in broad daylight, lots of cars around.

The Coyote was just walking down the sidewalk on the other side of the road.

Luckily a lady driving by slowed down when she saw the Coyote, and looked over at me, walking my dog - hopefully she would have helped if it started coming after us.

Very scary.

I also noticed blood on the sidewalk and snow near there, maybe from the coyote feeding earlier.

My wife & I saw two adult Coyotes walking in a field about 200 feet behind our home Sunday January 9, 2011, around the Bronte/Dundas S.E. quadrant.

They were very nonchalant walking through the field.

We were shocked to see them around at 8:30 in the morning in broad day light.

I saw a Coyote on Saturday August 3rd, 2010, around 2:00 p.m. walking along the sidewalk next to Negawaya Blvd., in front of the pond (lights at River Glen). It was really skinny looking and ugly, not like the photos. It had short dark hair and was definitely on the prowl. I have 2 cats that USED to go out on a leash.

There were a pack of Coyotes "5" that chased me and my dog on a trail between Proudfoot & Oakhaven. They were not friendly and scared the crap out of me. I figure they were very hungry and continued on to the pond.
