Waterloo Red-tailed Hawk Couple & Babies
by: Jax

My guess is that the adult delivering the rodent is the male hawk. He looks slightly smaller than the hawk on the left.

Raptors exhibit sexual dimorphism - which means the two sexes have distinct differences in size and appearance. In the mammalian world, the male is usually bigger; in the raptor world, the female is bigger in size - usually by about a 1/4 to a 1/3 bigger than the male.

It's believed that the bigger female can better protect/guard the nest, but what she gains in size, she loses in maneuverability. The male, on the other hand, is smaller but more maneuverable, so he can dive at intruders and better catch prey, especially prey in flight, like other birds.

These are *awesome* pictures and thanks so much for sharing! You're very fortunate to see this in person. If you want to see a live feed of red-tailed hawks raising their young, Cornell University in New York state has a live cam feed that has been online for at least a decade. I enjoy watching the two parents raise their young every year! :)
