Golden Eagle Sighting?

by Eric
(Barrie, Ontario, Canada)

I was recently driving at the split in Barrie Ontario. For those of you who don't know what that means, it is where the highway splits between highway 11 and highway 400.

I saw a bird, which I first thought was an Owl but saw it a couple weeks later, and think it is a Golden Eagle.

Has anyone else seen this bird? It often sits on the sign in the field when you follow hwy 400.

Thanks for this report of your Eagle sighting - if anyone sends us info, we'll post it here

Never seen anything like this. I have seen what I have thought to be a handful of falcons or eagles, but these have dark bellies and light/white undersides to their wings, are massive, and were flying together in a way that looked like a tornado spinning then flew around together.

On October 29th, 2021 at approximately 4:30 pm, I was on a side street in the Yonge and Summerhill area when a very large Golden Eagle swooped over the windshield of my car and landed on the ground and attacked and killed a squirrel and scooped it up and flew away. I have never seen such a large bird right in the heart of the midtown Toronto!

We just had about 8 large birds fly over our property. At a distance I thought it was a hawk but as it got closer it had a 3ft wingspan, it was grey / brown all over. I had never seen a bird as large as this, let alone in a flock. The closest thing was a year or two ago when I spotted a bald eagle. These birds were traveling west to east over a farming corridor next to the St Laurence river on the Ontario-Quebec border. Are the migrating through? I do hope I see them again to get them on film. The closest I'd seen to this was the flying monkeys in The Wizard of Oz.

Was in Strathroy Ontario Oct 24/19 leaving my brother in law's place (4 km west of town) in the country. A few hundred meters from his driveway I noticed a large bird feeding on some carrion on the side of the road. I haven't seen this bird in the wild and recognized it right away, massive, brown and gold and twice the size of a red tail. I was a 100 meters from it when it flew up into a tree. I sat on the shoulder of the road in awe as I snapped a few photos. Not the greatest angle, however, I believe one that knows the species would recognize it right away. Reading about Bald vs Golden, it is evident in the silhouette that you can see the feathers are growing right down to the talons.

Golden Eagle Sighting - Scarborough, Ontario

Just spotted a lone Golden Eagle perched on a tall tree stump in Warden Woods Ravine while heading eastbound to Warden Subway Station. Couldn't believe my eyes!!! We've lived on the Scarborough Bluffs for several decades & have seen all types of migratory birds, but never a Golden Eagle before! Judging from the massive size of this bird, it was likely a male & he was definitely the largest Eagle I have ever seen outside of the Rockies, so I rushed home to confirm if anyone else had recently spotted him in the Scarborough Bluffs &/or Toronto area. Very exciting find, but disappointed that I was stuck on a subway train & didn't have time to take photos of him!

Driving from Paisley, Ontario, to the GTA...
We thought it was a Turkey on the side of the road from a distance because of it's size. When we got closer it turned its head and we could see that this was definitely not a Turkey, or Turkey Vulture. Its hooked beak and unbelievable size lead me to believe it was definitely an Eagle. The beak was not yellow, but greyish in colour. Its back and wings were black/dark and brown. I didn't notice any spots or light patches at all, but then I was driving and only got a split second clear observation. I've seen a Golden Eagle before in captivity, but never in the wild. I never thought I'd see one so close to home.

Seen one today
by: Jacqui

Saw a Golden Eagle hovering above Jackson park in Windsor, Ontario, yesterday, funnily enough there were no squirrels to be seen running around in the park when usually there's heaps! Then saw another one today while driving on the road. Beautiful!

Eagle Sighting in Goderich
by: Pauline

I believe that I saw a Golden Eagle this morning at the lake front in Goderich, Ontario.

At first I thought it was a Bald Eagle as we have them in the area, but looking closer it didn't have the white head and tail of the Bald Eagle. If only I'd had my binoculars and I wasn't driving!

I'm not sure, but I believe that Bald Eagles do not get their adult plumage until their fifth year, in which case, that could be what you saw - you may find this interesting - Cornell Lab of Ornithology

Sightings in St Marys
by: Anonymous

I don't know about the Barrie area but I live on the Thames River in St Marys, Ontario, and have seen what I believe is a Golden Eagle in flight and resting in a dead tree several times over a two week period in Late October - apparently there have been approximately 100 of these birds sighted at Hawk Cliff on Lake Erie.

If only I could have gotten a photo.

A local birder confirmed the sightings both on the Thames and on Lake Erie.

Golden Eagle in Brampton
by: Anonymous

We just saw one this morning in Brampton, Ontario, close to Heart Lake Conservation. It was perched in of all places our 150 year old maple tree. We have many rabbits in the neighborhood so I am guessing that is what attracted it.

If you did spot a Golden, that would be very exciting as their usual range is in Northern Ontario, but I have learned that however unlikely, nothing is impossible!

Thank you for telling us about this!

Golden Eagle
by: Anonymous

Hi - I had also recently had seen a Golden Eagle in Stoney Point, Ontario. It was on the ground at the time, walking around with what looked like a broken wing. We called the Rescue Center.

Wow, if you did find a Golden, that would be really exciting as their usual range is from North Bay, Ontario, northward, but I have learned that nothing is impossible!

Thank you for telling us about this!

Grey County Eagle
by: Anonymous

I think my wife and I saw a Golden Eagle perched on a dead tree stump - perhaps 10 - 15 tall - off of Provincial Highway 6 and south of Grey County Rd # 9 on July 29th, 2012.

It was about 5 - 10 km north of Mt Forest on Provincial Highway 6 on the east side of the Hwy

One landed on my car
by: Kelly

I work in South Oakville, Ontario, and my coworker called me out to show me the huge bird standing on the roof of my car, it was gigantic, over 2 feet tall.

It wasn't a Hawk or an Owl. I just looked it up and listened to the sounds it makes, which I heard pretty distinctly when I approached my car.

He stood there for approximately 10 minutes, poking around the edges of the sun roof and making noise.

Perhaps about to migrate south?

golden eagle siting
by: Anonymous

I have seen a Golden Eagle flying over our farm (located in King City, Ontario). Once I saw the bird gliding over our 15 year old Jack Russell. He was about 8 feet above us and luckily several small birds were attacking him and caused him to lose balance. I have seen the bird 2 other times but not such a close distance. I have never seen a Gold Eagle here before. Normally, we see Hawks and a Horned Owl on the farm.
Earlier the summer we also spotted a Bald Eagle in Georgian Bay flying over an Island Called American Camp. Stunning! One of our neighbors at Thunder Beach saw a Bald Eagle on the Point. I hear that these large birds are making a comeback to Ontario
