Ferrets in Southern Ontario

by Julie Dennis
(Dundas, Ontario, Canada)

We live just outside of Hamilton, Ontario, and we live across from a creek and very close to a swampy area and grassland.

The other night at about midnight, my husband saw something that looked like a wild ferret running down the street.

Is this possible? What could it have been?

How interesting! I wonder if what your husband saw could have been a River Otter?

I also researched and figure that what your husband might have seen was either, a Weasel, Mink or Fisher, which typically don't live in Southern Ontario as they are more likely to be found in Northern Ontario.

Or, it could have been a pet Ferret which had been released or had escaped from captivity.

I wonder if any of our readers have seen this animal, or something similar, in the Hamilton area?

November 4/22 I was going out side and when motion light came on I saw what appeared to be a weasel or a ferret? Weird all summer I saw something digging a hole from under my deck into fenced in garden. I thought it was a rat but the hole looked too wide??? Must have been this weasel or ferret doing it.

Ferret in London

My husband spotted a ferret this morning in our backyard in London. I had seen something earlier in the spring that looked like an odd skinny ground hog that I think now must have been a ferret. He is much more knowledgeable than I about the creatures that visit our yard so I think it’s safe to assume the ferret has been around for a while.

Not sure what is was, it was a solid reddish brown.
Was sitting down, he came over nodded his head twice or sorta charged - scared me enough I stood up and he walked away nothing was said. Perhaps either hungry or aggressive, he walked away when I stood up. In Rockwood Conservation area, any ideas what it was?

Wild ferret in Sarnia Ontario
by: SUsan

I’m in Sarnia, Ontario. I was looking out my window into the backyard admiring a wild rabbit munching on clover. Out from the bushes pounced a ferret. The rabbit got away and the ferret slinked back into the bushes. I have had 3 pet ferrets in my life, my first being a Black Footed ferret 37 years ago. Not sure if what I saw was a domesticated ferret or a Black Footed ferret. All the research I’ve done tells me that it can’t be the Black-footed because they aren’t in this area. The one I saw was sable in colour but beyond that I can’t say because I was in shock.

Ferret sighting
by: Kaz Jar

I live in Sudbury, Ontario and was taking the recycling out this morning when I saw what I first thought was a large squirrel run by me. However, when I looked for it I spotted it again on the front steps about 3m from me. Looked like a smaller skinnier mink but silvery white with some scattered darker markings. After a little online research I think it may have been a black-footed ferret. Seems this animal is indigenous to central Canada/US living on prairie dogs. Its numbers were dangerously low at one point but breeding programs have reintroduced it mainly in central US and Canada. But, the Toronto Zoo also raised hundreds which they released into the wild-where, I don't know. As this is still a fairly rare animal and Sudbury is not its natural habitat and I am in no way an expert on ferrets I may be wrong. May be a pet ferret gone rogue or some other type of ferret local to the area but definitely a ferret.
UPDATE: I added a comment a little while ago about possibly seeing a black footed ferret in Sudbury Ontario. On doing further research it may have been a short tailed weasel with a winter coat which seems more likely for the area.

Thanks for the update!

Dark brown Mink or Marten, Fruitland Road, Stoney Creek ,Ont
by: Juanita Kleoacs

On Fruitland Road in Stoney Creek, Ontario east side. Just spotted a dark brown mink running alongside our shallow creek about 6 or 7 yards then jumped in creek went underneath into the banking, that runs through my backyard. The banking is a home used by a muskrat in previous years. At first site I thought it was a dark squirrel but soon could see its a little mink or marten. The neighborhood cat had just come from that direction to me and think this mink was searching for him. This is my second time seeing one here in my creek last summer seen it once too. This time got a good full long look at him, unbelievable to see it here after 21 years living here.

Could this be a River Otter I saw?
by: Carol Hodgson

I just returned from a hike on Morrison creek north, Oakville. I saw what looked most like a river otter, not black, bigger than a mink, which we do have plenty of in Oakville. He raced along the side of the creek playing and jumping along logs. I had a great view of him with the snow as a background. Whatever it was, it was a fabulous sight. As a hiker I always look for wildlife and this time I was rewarded.

I live in Dundas, and today on my way to McDonalds what I thought to be a ferret crossed Olympic Drive right in front of my car. The walk was unmistakably ferret-like, but it was all black and I was surprised because I had never seen a black ferret... now reading through comments here I think it might have been an American Mink. I thought about a river otter too, but it seemed a bit smallish for an otter- although it could have been a juvenile too I guess. Anyway, it was a beautiful little black creature and I do hope I'll see it again :)

I Live about 50 meters from a creek bed. I have a lot of cotton tail rabbits that stay in and around my back yard. Today I was standing on my deck and a mink came under my fence 10 feet from me looked around and then retreated the way he came. Looking for the rabbits no doubt. Way too big to be a ferret. All dark brown in colour. I have seen one in the past but smaller in the creek swimming and on the move.

Fishes missing from pond after winter in Oakville
by: Sri

I had 15 large koi fishes (about 1 feet long) in my backyard pond which was covered with wood lattice. After the winter ice had melted, and the temperature close to 7 degrees, I opened to prepare for getting ready to feed the fish, however all of them had disappeared. Looks like some predator, like a mink, had visited recently. I have had the fishes for 3 years and have had no problems before and had assumed minks won't be here in uptown Oakville close to Dundas and Trafalgar. I feel devastated and wondering if I should close the pond or device a way to protect the pond if I were to have fishes again.

Weasels in southern Ontario
by: Darryl Wooldridge

I have to disagree with your comment that weasels do not live in Southern Ontario. Sitting out on my balcony here in Orangeville, my wife and I watched as one was trying to catch a little red squirrel. It was a little bigger than the black squirrel it was chasing first, but I recognized the shape of the body as a weasel. My cousin in Midland has posted pictures of one in her backyard that has been there for a couple of years now. She always manages to get pictures in the white phase.

Ermine or Ferret?
by: Norwood, ON

On the morning of February 12, I witnessed a short legged, long bodied, and tail animal running around my yard. I wasn't sure if it was a ferret, a weasel or a ermine. It's coat was white but there was some light brown around it's face and black on the tip of it's tail. I live on 100 acres of woods and fields with some swampy areas near by. From pictures that I've looked up the critter looked more like a ferret or an ermine than a weasel or minx.

12 noon, October 4, 2019. Driving up Robert Adams Drive, a full suburb of Courtice, ON (just east of Oshawa), I thought the squirrel crossing far ahead of me looked "different". As I got closer, and it was up someone’s front yard by the time I passed, I realized it was some sort of weasel or otter. I know there’s a ravine around here somewhere, but this was just running across the street from front yard to front yard. So curious to know exactly what it was!

Animal Sighting in Oakville
by: Anonymous

On September 23rd I spotted a long, low, sausage-shaped animal on the Oakville waterfront on Lake Ontario. It had dark brown fur, possibly with a little black and it quickly scooted between the large rocks. The length of the body was about 30 cm and the not all that bushy tail was about 20 cm. I thought it might have been a mink, but was told by someone else that it might have been a ferret. I doubt it was an otter or a muskrat.

They are around
by: Ryan White

I lived in Dundas Ontario for many years and would often hike, canoe or fish along Cootes Paradise and in the creeks that run into Dundas, on many many occasions, we saw similar animals, on 3 occasions we sat and watched the animal eating a small bird one time and small perch on another and on the third occasion we saw the little guy eating a mouse. At first I thought they were pine marten but after doing research I was wrong. They are either weasels or fishers. If you would like to see them yourself take the Cootes Drive street heading towards Dundas, halfway to town there is a creek. There is a small parking area off the shoulder. Park there go along the West Bank of the creek (there is a path) go slow and quiet odds are you will see one. If you want more info email me. rwhite@hwdsb.on.ca. If you don’t see one enjoy the other wildlife such as Bald Eagles, endangered Turtles, Beaver many many species of waterfowl and other feathered friends.

About Fishers
by: DC Rice

Hey folks -just for the record, ferrets, otters, fishers, etc. are all part of the weasel family. I live in the township of East Garafraxa next to Orangeville and have seen two Fishers since last summer in the area. The first one I managed to get a bunch of pictures. It was about three and a half feet long and weighed about 10lbs. It was very aggressive. Fishers are the second largest weasels in North America, second to the sea otters.

Thanks for the info - if you have pictures we'd love to see them! Go to our "Area Animals" page, scroll down, and go to where it says "Enter your title" and a form will open up where you can tell us about your Fisher sightings and add pictures too!

I live a couple hundred yards from Twenty Mile Creek. Two days ago my dogs started going nuts around my BBQ. I pulled it out and there was a baby Possum underneath. Tonight as I was sitting in the living room the dogs started to get a little antsy, so I let them out and again they headed straight for my BBQ. I assumed the Possum was back so I lifted the BBQ lid and peered with my flashlight through the mesh panel on the BBQ cover to see a whitish face looking back at me. I looked through many pictures of mink, weasel and fisher and the only picture that matched what I saw was a cinnamon coloured ferret. I've lived in the area for most of my 60 years and I've never encountered a ferret. I'm afraid my dogs have become hunters now.

Saw a lovely dark Mink today while walking along the creek. Surprised me. It was swimming across the creek so I stopped and watched it scampering over all the rocks, weaving in and out. It came within 4 feet of me. Stopped and raised up on its hind legs, sniffing the air and then scampered off in the slinky way a mink's body moves. I've reviewed all the images online for muskrats, weasels, ferrets, Stoats and the like and this was definitely a Mink. What a thrill!

Medium brown, silky coat, darted about like a chipmunk until the hose scared it under the fence. If it reduces the field mouse population, that's okay with me. I live in Cobourg, Ontario and I have sighted at least 3 Wild Ferrets in 3 different locations all being beside the Lake in the big chunks of rocks. One location was here in Cobourg down at the light house, the other location was down from my house where there is a public access to the Lake, I seen one there and I had seen one at Wicklow Beach, just east of Cobourg. I thought I was going crazy seeing all these ferrets everywhere until I read this post and it validates my sightings. I think we now have Wild Ferrets running around.

Mink
by: Dgc

I live in Oakville along Sixteen Mile Creek. I have a Mink that comes in my backyard often. I saw him chase a rat into my pool. He kept circling the pool trying to catch the rat. My daughter scared the mink and saved the rat! Not my idea!

Road kill Ferret in Oshawa
by: Anonymous

On the way to the Go station this morning driving along Bloor, there was a road kill black and white ferret in the north gutter, right somewhere between the intersection at the trailer shop and the best western.

I'm guessing this must have been an escaped pet?

Ferret
by: fred

At Lakeview Park in Oshawa, Ontario, I saw what I thought was a baby black squirrel, but it wasn't walking like one. I thought it might be hurt, but when I got close it was a black ferret. It ran into the bushes. It's the first time I have seen one in the park.

Ferrets in Prince Edward Dounty
by: Christine

I saw what I think was a baby ferret or weasel, long, narow, brown on top, white on bottom, about the size of a chipmunk....it ran across the road, turned around and ran back to the ditch where I saw four others....a car went by and they disappeared.....this was in the Bloomfield / Wellington area of Prince Edward County.

Ferret?
by: Busy_Dad

At about 6:00pm today I saw what looked like a ferret run up to the pond in front of my house with the typical slinky movement. It jumped into the pond and then quickly climbed out and skipped along the edge of the pond. It was medium brown, about 20 inches long with a long nose, short legs and a slim body. I'm in Caledon and do have muskrats in the pond occasionally.

I wonder if it was a Weasle or an Otter?

Mink (possibly) seen in Ancaster
by: Anonymous

While driving to work this morning at 8:30, something ran across Sulphur Springs Rd (near Wilson) in front of may car. My first thought was a Mink, then I wondered about a dark ferret. It was a very dark brown colour. I couldn't see any other markings.

Stouffville, Ontario - have seen a white looking Ferret come out from under the Hot Tub, all white. Is this a Ferret? And are they wild? Seems healthy. We have no ponds, lakes or streams here.

Sighting in Guelph ON
by: Anonymous

I live in Guelph, Ontario, and came across this while doing a Google search to find out what "wild ferret" thing just ran across my backyard. I Google image searched a Weasel first and I'm not sure that was it...it didn't look quite the same. I also live near a swamp, forest, creek and pond.
Just Google image searched Mink and without a doubt this is what I saw. I got a very close, calm and somewhat long look through my wall to wall window.

Weasel or ferret?
by: Anonymous

I live on the Hamilton mountain and back onto a pathway/park along the Lincoln Alexander Parkway. Last night March 4th 2013 I nearly ran something over on my street that at first I thought was a rat. I've seen my fair share of rats as they plentiful at my work (I work in a factory by the lake) and the body on this creature seemed too long and slinky. It was brown or grayish/black in colour although it ran by too quick to tell for sure. I'm guessing it's a weasel or somebody's ferret.

Mink in Hamilton?
by: Julie Dennis

Really a Mink? I didn't think they lived in the Hamilton area.
I have seen Muskrats down at the marshy end of Spencer Creek in Dundas.
But my husband says what he saw was not a muskrat, so perhaps a Mink.
Neither of us has seen anything like it since the first sighting.

My partner and myself also saw what looked to be a Mink, all black along Sulfur Creek in Ancaster in the spring of 2012. It was a glorious sight to see.

What you are all seeing is most likely a Muskrat or Mink they look like Ferrets as they are from the Weasel family, only they are wild creatures and not tame household pets.

Ferret?
by: Anonymous

Most of what people saw are probably mink. Ferrets would have had to have been released by owners. Mink normally hang near water though. Weasels are not that big. Size of a mouse only long like a mink. They turn white with a black tip tail in winter. We see mink all the time in Wiarton along the shore in the rocks. They will swim out and try to ambush young Mallard swimming with the hen.

White ferret type looking animal!
by: Anonymous

Jan. 09/13 I couldn't believe my eyes when all of a sudden I saw what looks like a ferret bound across my back deck!! It was pure white with a black tip on its tail. We back onto a forest but haven't seen anything like this in the 10 years we've lived here. It was very cute! It sounds like others have seen the same type of animal and believe it's a Weasel. We live in Guelph, Ontario. I hope to see it again!

I saw what I thought was a ferret on my neighbor's roof last night, and after speaking to my brother he told me it was most likely a Weasel. After looking at some pictures on the net I think he is correct.

Burlington Ontario

I just found the remains of a large koi & a Black ferret. The Ferret drowned in my leaf catcher screen. I wonder if the other Burlington was in the same area & do they nest in pairs as I see it had dug a hole to get under my deck. How do u get rid of them as the fish was $$$$

We saw one in Burlington
by: Anonymous

We live in Burlington and just saw an all black Weasel go under the net on our pond and when we went outside it went into the rocks. I think it is probably trying to eat our fish. It was all black.

I had a ferret as a kid and it looked the same except slightly bigger.

Albion Falls

I was walking on the path just across the bridge over the red hill and saw a bunch of small slender quick critters run across the path at different times. I am an avid hiker and wildlife watcher and I have never ever seen a wild weasel before, I was shocked and am returning tonight to try to find more.

Wild Ferret?
by: Randy

Driving between St Catharines - Thorold, I had a critter cross in front of me on St David's Road at the landfill near Brock residences.

It was too small to be a Weasel or Otter, brown and black in color, very quick. They are not indigenous I am pretty sure, so possibly released or escaped from a student's room?

I live in London, Ontario and I had seen the weasel in my garden, we chased it, worry that it will get into rat trap. Very cute animal and feeds on voles, which is great:)

Fort Erie

I thought that I saw a baby ferret about a week ago. I'm not sure what it was exactly. It was about 30cm long including the tail. Small, slinky and light brown with a cute ferret face. It was on the deck with me and wasn't too scared when I talked to it. We have adult chipmunks who visit us daily, and when the (ferret?)came back on my deck a few minutes later, it had a baby chipmunk dangling from it's mouth!

I live in rural Aurora, Ontario, and have also seen a wild ferret. Unfortunately, the one I saw was dead as my cat had hunted it and brought it in through the cat door. Ahhh nature.

I also live in Dundas and have spotted this same thing a couple times....that is actually what brought me here.

It looks most like the River Otter. I have a small stream running through my backyard.

Are they common?

Lagoon City (Brechin)
by: Anonymous

Last summer my boyfriend and I were walking down the pier in Lagoon City when we saw what we thought was a Ferret.

After looking online, I now believe this was a Weasel. They are very similar in looks and I can see how people would confuse them for each other!

Correction - a Weasel, not a Ferret
by: Anonymous

I was searching the internet and I now believe what I saw was not a Ferret but a Weasel.

It only stayed around for about 2 hours and has not been back.

Managed to get just one picture of it also.

I just had an all white with a black tip tail ferret come up to me while I was changing the bird feeder.

He is just hanging around the back yard and the bush at the back.

What is a quick way to tell the difference between the ferret and a weasel?

I also have seen what I am sure is a Ferret in our area near the river also.

I wonder if what you saw might have been an Otter, seeing as it was close to water?

Interesting sighting!
by: Meaghan Edwards

I live in Hamilton, Ontario, and have seen such an animal in my own (suburban) backyard! I believe it was a Fisher.

I understand that with development they've been forced to live closer to human contact.

I hope people learn to coexist with them instead of falling for predator-based scare tactics :(

Me too!
