Coyote in Richmond Hill

by Lori
(Richmond Hill. Ontario)

Lori, one of our readers, sent us this report of her Coyote sighting - I spotted a coyote walking through my back yard to get to a wooded area. Not a problem, but both my cats were outside with me and worried it would come after them.

I chased it away, and Im not happy that I have to worry about wild animals that could kill or hurt my pets.

I also don't feel they should have to be stuck inside because of them.

Lori, Richmond Hill

Thanks for the info, Lori, I hope your neighbours in Richmond Hill are keeping an eye on their pets, and making sure that they don't let them out unaccompanied when there are Coyotes known to be around!

Today, May21st 2023 close to 7pm, saw what looked like a big coyote (or wolf?) in the middle of the trail/path, standing motionless and staring towards the school. I was still fairly away from it and given its size got pretty scared and started moving backwards fast, the animal didn't react, don't think it saw me, it was very focused looking at something.

I was walking my dog at around 11pm at David Hamilton park near the naturalized area and a large coyote came up from behind me. It kept following me and wasn’t scared of my loud yells until I slapped the leash on the ground which startled the coyote and that was when I was able to get enough distance away from the coyote.

I was at Harrington Park, in the car with my friend when we saw a large animal run across the road in front of us. It was dark so we thought it was a fox at first, but it seemed too big for a fox. I’m thinking it was a coyote, as I've seen some from time to time over the years in this area. Can anyone confirm sightings around this area?

I've seen a family of coyotes on the Oak Ridges Trail, Old Colony/Bayview. It was kind of scary to see four coyotes at the same time, so close to the residential area. This trail is very popular among the residents and dog walkers. Are packs of coyotes dangerous?

Groups of Coyotes, and even individual Coyotes, can be dangerous. Be careful in the areas where they are being seen and don't let your dog off leash.

There is at least 1 very tall coyote or coywolf in the Weldrick Rd. West and Kersey Crescent area near the streams behind the properties. It is bold and approaches people and homes. If you value your pets, DO NOT let them out alone! Numerous missing pets flyers have been seen on poles, but the reality is they were probably a coyote snack. Use caution.

My dog and I were confronted by 2 coyotes at 10:30 a.m. on a Sunday morning in Briar Nine Conservation area. My dog was on a leash and they still came towards us and stopped when I raised my hands and started shouting. My dog is a Golden Retriever and large so I was very surprised that they showed no fear and seemed to be sizing us up. I had to back away to escape them. Scary considering there is a playground and paved pathways inviting people to walk there.

Spotted a few coyotes today. Three were in the pond located down the street from my home. It is a pond located off of North Lake Road, spotted around 8 pm. My neighbour said they were loud the night before and won’t let her dog out into the backyard anymore even if she’s watching. My son had one run out across the road while he was out with the dog, around 12 pm, last week as well. Pretty scary stuff, keep your pets safe out there.

Our new house on Paradelle Court faces what is left of the Moraine. Directly across from our house is the highest point. The wild space below is a large bowl shaped depression. Our local coywolf regularly comes to this spot and yips and howls. It's his theatre and usually gets a response from other coywolves in the area. We also regularly see deer and Red Tail's. This is in the Yonge and Bloomington area.

Saw a Coyote in my backyard at 9 am. Should I report it to authorities, and if so, which ones?

If you feel that the Coyote might be a danger, then call the Ministry of Natural Resources, but it is likely they already know that there are Coyotes in your area. If the animal was behaving in a threatening way, or if you thought it was sick, then the best thing might be to report it.

Coyote possibly sighted Oak Ridges
by: Anonymous

This morning I saw what looked like a coyote in the ravine area southeast of Bloomington and Yonge, from my backdoor. It was roaming around and I think it possibly found something to eat because it was trying to dig in the ground frantically. Afterwards it was moving in such a way that would suggest it was eating something. I doubt if the animal was with someone walking around, since I didn't see anyone. I doubt any domesticated animal would dig for something to eat. Dig as in perhaps a critter's home in the ground.

Coyote chased my dog 2 days ago at 6:30am on Oak Ridges Trail near the Bathurst Glen Golf Course. The coyote was very large, possibly German Shepherd size. My dog is 50 pounds and this animal was twice as big. I yelled at him and he ran away but continued barking and howling so we got out of there before more came. They bark exactly like dogs. Other people have reported seeing coyotes there too, even packs, although after a year of walking this was my fist sighting.

Was surprised to see a coyote at Yonge and Regatta this morning while walking my dog. He started to approach us but as I turned back, he stopped and started in another direction. He did seem uncertain and a little wary. I was very wary!! Russell Tilt park is a very open park and it was at 8:15 in the morning, when local children are heading to the nearby public school. We are going to see these guys around more because we have removed much of their habitat with new developments . I think that when spotted, the local people and schools should be notified so that they can take precautions. I will walk with a walking stick from now on, just in case, and my dog will always be leashed with me when outside. She is small and blind, much too easy a target!

Coyote in my backyard
by: Bharangi

Its Oct 3 2011, and I was just going to let my little mini dog out into my backyard when I saw on my porch a very large coyote. I am not going to feel comfortable letting her out again. I have lived here 20 years in a residential area and my backyard is fenced in. I do have a 40 foot pond and water feature so this could be of interest to the coyote. I called my elderly neighbor next-door and she said she found a squirrel's tail in her backyard yesterday. She has many cats so this could be a concern to her. I live at Yonge and MajorMak.
