A Large White Animal with a long Rat likeTail in Brampton Ont

by Lisa
(Brampton, Ontario, Canada)

At About 2:30 at night I looked out my bedroom window and I saw a very large-looking white animal walking up my pathway to my front door.

I thought was a large white cat but it definitely was not!!

It heard me and looked up at me turned and went across the lawn it was the size of a baby pig, round and pudgy looking, with a long rat-like tail and very small fine fur with a rat-looking face.

I have never seen anything like this ever, I think it was a white possum, or an extremely large rat, this thing was the size of a large cat or slightly bigger.

Whatever it was was very strange and walked away, it didnt run, so I got a good look at this thing and was shocked.

Thank-you Lisa, for your report - what you are describing sounds like a Possum to me!

I think I have a nest of baby opossums under my shed. What can I do? In Oshawa Ontario.

I'd just leave them, they can't do any any harm and they eat ticks.

I saw this animal outside my back garden later yesterday in Brampton ON. Should my family be concerned?

No need for concern, Opossums are pretty harmless, and they eat ticks.

Was walking home from Aquafit in Richmond Hill when an animal the size of a Jack Russell Terrier came out of the Green Belt. White, pointed pink nose, ratlike tail. We looked at each other for a minute then it went back into the Green Way.

Possum sighting
by: Surprised in Richmond Hill

I came home from work on December 5th at 9:45pm to find a Possum in my driveway. He was large (raccoon size) white with a long rat-like tail (12 inches in length). I never thought I would ever see a Possum in Richmond Hill, Ontario.

Saw large black rat-like animal on fence. Rat tail, sleek black fur. Jumped into tree like squirrel, not scurrying like a rat.

I am sitting in Florida where Possum sightings are very common - only to get a video of a strange animal on my deck at home. It is definitely a Possum. I feel better after seeing all of your comments that they really are in southern Ontario.

Rat like in backyard
by: Patti

The other evening about 9pm I turned on my porch light and saw this large as a cat like animal with a rat like tail in my backyard. The light didn't scare it and it didn't run off. I live in Portland, OR now, however, I saw one at my condo complex in San Diego, CA. I guess they must be everywhere.

Very large possum carrying several babies hanging on the side undisturbed walked slowly through the back garden where children were playing in the early afternoon. Never seen this creature before but was very surprised at the overall size and tough looking appearance

A Very Large Possum in Oshawa
by: Anonymous

Date: May 29, 2013
Place: North Oshawa
Time:7:15 a.m.

There it was, waddling along our tall hedge in the backyard. It was much larger than any "cute" animal I'd want to come across while putting out garbage or gardening and certainly bigger than the biggest cat I've ever seen. Quite a shock to see something like this in our area and I would be concerned if I had children or pets who might come in contact with an animal this size.

Possum in Ajax, Ontario

I looked out the window at 8:00 am December 3 2012 to see a huge rat-like grey animal walking slowly along my fence. It wasn't very agile. It seemed to have trouble waddling along the fence. It was about 15 pounds with short grey hair and a rat-like hairless tail. I've never seen an animal like this in the 20 years I've lived here.

Yep, you saw a Possum!

We had borrowed some city traps to try and catch Raccoons in our yard that are destroying our large tree and such.

The one morning, when looking out my window, I could see something in the trap. I couldn't see exactly what it was, but knew it wasn't a Raccoon.

I went out to take a closer look. Wow, was this thing ever ugly and scary looking! Like an extra large "scraggly" rat bearing it's teeth at me.

The city worker confirmed it was a Possum. I didn't know we had them in our area. We do live in proximity from the river, which is where this one had probably travelled from!!

Poor Opossum :'(
by: Anonymous

I went to pick up my daughter from work tonight and passed by a dead Possum, which I thought was a seal-pointed cat at first pass.

However on the way home with my daughter I got a better look at it and indeed it was a young opossum which I don't think reached adulthood.

Looks like the Opossum ended up as road-kill.

The poor thing is probably still laying dead in the street intact, and I highly doubt it's playing dead. :'(

A cute creature I've never seen
by: Romina

I was up one morning getting ready to drop my daughter off at school for a trip, when all of a sudden my daughter spotted this Rat-like Creature.

We took pictures then began to look up different animals to figure out which one this was and in fact it was a Possum.

It was actually quite cute and very amazing to see in our backyard, I've never seen one up close!

Possum for sure
by: Anonymous

If what you saw was white, had a rat-like tail, was as big as a cat and was out and about at night, then in all likelyhood, it was a Possum that you saw!

They are becoming more and more common all across Southern Ontario these days and I see them now and again where I live near Brantford.

Sometimes the ones I see are missing ears because of the frostbite but otherwise they are doing ok.
