Osprey

Osprey

We have been keeping an eye on the Bald Eagle Nest at Fanshawe, they are very active.

A week or so ago we saw an Osprey fly overhead while at Gibbon's Park.

This past Saturday we were lucky enough to find a pair of Osprey nesting in North London!!

AMAZING!

Thank you for telling us about your sightings of these Birds of Prey, and for the picture too - it is great to know that there are some in this area!

Possible Osprey on Sovereign Road
by: Anonymous

We have a large bird on the cell tower at the south end of 400 Sovereign Rd in London. Not sure if it is an Osprey or not. Will have to bring a set of binoculars and check it out. Can't find anything posted on here as to anyone else spotting them.

Bald eagle spotted hunting around the Holiday Inn and Suites London, in the Southdale area. It was flying very low, barely higher than the light posts, so it was easy to identify.

Osprey nest at Fanshawe Rd and Clarke Rd, London
by: Anonymous

In mid December '20 I was very concerned when I noticed that the pole with the long standing Osprey nest had been replaced with a new one and of course the nest was gone. Then closer to the end of December I was very excited and pleased to see that a man-made platform had been erected on one of the new poles! Hopefully the Osprey will be willing to make a new nest up there! I have been watching them for over 5 years. Thank you to Ontario Hydro and anyone else involved for building them the platform!

We were just coming into town from Lobo on Fanshawe Park Road. About 3 km before we hit town there was a large Bald Eagle gliding around in the air over the road and a pond next to the road. We could clearly see his bright white head and tail.

There is a pair nesting on a hydro tower north of Commissioners Road. I have been seeing one occasionally for the last couple of years, but have been seeing a lot of them (almost daily) for the last couple of weeks and a couple of times I have seen 2 at at time. Hope to get some pictures soon!

I have a drone and I have for sometime wanted to get pictures of the nest. I would stay far back of course. What do you think, not sure if they would try to attack drone.

Maybe, providing you don't startle or disturb the birds.

I'm 99% sure there is a nesting pair at the top of a tower near this intersection! I haven't been able to snap a good photo yet, but I will as soon as I have one.

p.s. I freaked out thinking they were eagles at first (due to a super blurry phone camera shot LOL) - but now we're fairly certain they are Osprey :)

Saturday May 05 2018 approximately 8:00 pm we spotted an Osprey high in a tree in the middle of North Branch of the Thames about 200 metres east of the bridge on Highbury Ave just South of Fanshawe. Saw it dive (unsuccessfully) for a meal, a beautiful sight.

Nests - Clarke Rd. N
by: Elaine D

There's a large nest in tree on a farm at the south west corner of Killaly and Clarke Rd. We've stopped a couple of times but haven't seen any activity yet. Also hoping to see the Ospreys back at the nest at the corner of Clarke/Fanshawe very soon. No sign of renovations to it yet this spring. They raised 3 chicks last year.

After the death of one of the pair in May 2016 (likely the female), it's good to see a pair on the nest at Clarke and Fanshawe again this year. The previous female was banded, this one is not. Incubation is underway!

Osprey or Eagle Nest
by: Tracy

Just wondering if anyone can confirm if the nest at Fanshawe and Clarke Road has Eagles or Ospreys in it? It looks like Osprey....

Barb here - I have had reports of both, but I have seen Ospreys nesting there myself, so I would say Ospreys. There are Bald Eagles nearby at Fanshawe Park.

Where did you see Bald Eagles?

I know there are Balds at Fanshawe Lake, and there is a nest and Balds just north of St Thomas on country road 52 (Ron McNeil Line) west of Wellington Road in a area of woodland on the north side of the road - I have watched Bald Eagles coming and going to the nest.

I have been photographing these Osprey for over a month, pretty active pair as I often catch them both grooming on the poles next to their nest, Photos added often here: Osprey Nest

There is another pair of Osprey nesting in one of the overhead lights at the baseball field, east end of Windermere Road. Much higher up and harder to photograph.

Thanks for the clarification and info!

It is indeed an Osprey nest at the corner of Clarke and Fanshawe Roads. You can see my (copyrighted) photos from May 12th here: Osprey Nest

My husband and I think of the pair as Lois and Clarke. Eggs will likely hatch around the middle of June.

Thanks for the info and clarification!

Take your binoculars
by: Anonymous

Yes it is true... I go to Fanshawe and Clarke Road intersection and it is definitely an Eagle's nest. I went the last 3 days in a row and the babies are hatched, I just don't see how many. The nest itself is massive and I watched one bird get food. The other Eagle watched and then came home to feed the baby or babies??? I just can't see at all, the nest is deep. I will keep going every day as the flight and sights are extraordinary. I am totally captivated, so as soon as I can there will be pictures!
Thanks for sending this to us - I was there last Friday and saw the nest, it is big, but when I was there, there were no parents to be seen.

Has anyone seen the large nest sitting on the hydro poles at this intersection? I'm curious to know what type of birds these are if anyone has seen them and knows.

I believe that is a Bald Eagle nest - other people have reported that the nest is there, and they have seen Balds flying in and out

Osprey Near Fanshawe Dam
by: Gerry Pocock

On September 18, 2013 I saw an Osprey pair flying around the Fanshawe Dam (London). I took some pictures of them from a distance and ultimately discovered later one of them had a freshly caught fish in its grasp. Shortly after the one with the fish landed on a dead tree about a 1/4 mile west of the dam. I got some awesome pictures of it eating the fish. There was a lot of wildlife noise at one point and the bird seemed to get spooked and dropped the fish in the water. I continued west on the trail to the road. When I returned 20-30 minutes latter, the osprey was back in the tree continuing its lunch. I got more pictures of it from the ground underneath, probably only 25-30 yards away.

Osprey nest
by: Anita

I forgot to mention, the nest I saw was on the south-east corner of Veterans Memorial Parkway and Gore Road, at the top of a communication tower behind Crawford Metal building.

EDIT - Dear Readers, if you have the opportunity to view this nest, please do so quietly and try to cause as little disturbance to the birds as possible. I like to tell our readers where they can find interesting wildlife, but I do so on the condition that they do not cause stress or anxiety to the animals. Thanks.

I've been observing the same nest for a few weeks now and there has been some activity. I've seen 3 heads at once sitting in the nest. I didn't know if they were Osprey or Bald Eagles. The nest is so high and the view from the ground is hard to tell them apart....either way, its a wonderful sight.

Saw a strange raptor today flying low near Fanshawe Park Road and Clarke Road. I saw it land on a hydro pole on the south east corner of the intersection. Pole also contained a large nest made of sticks. I am pretty sure this is an Osprey nest site.
I'll be in north London tomorrow, so I'll go and take a look! Thanks for telling us about your raptor sighting!

Osprey at Labatt Park
by: BionicallyHip

There is a large nest on top of the northern set of lights at Labatt Park. The birds look to be osprey from their silhouettes. They are still nest building as they make frequent trips to the nest with large sticks. A great spot to view the nest is along the multi-use trail near Rogers Ave. :)

Definitely Osprey
by: Raph

I definitely spotted a pair of Osprey at the intersection of Veterans Memorial Parkway & Gore Road. On my way home from work I was sitting at the lights there, and I noticed one flying high and approaching carrying a branch towards a nest constructed on the top of this very tall tower on the south-east corner of the intersection. And there was one already perched on top (behind CMC Crawford Metal) Not sure if they're still there though. Amazing sight!
