Lynx or something close spotted in St. Catharines

by One of our readers
(St Catharines, Ontario)

My house is on the Twelve Mile Creek, in St Catharines, Ontario, and one day I was on a little walk in the back, as I usually do, when I saw a giant cat, so I looked it up, and it turns out to be a Lynx!

Wow, I wonder if any other readers have seen this animal in the St Catharines area - if you have, please let us know!

That would be very unusual for a Lynx to be in such a populated area, but who knows!

Weird animal in Wainfleet
by: Anonymous

About 3 years ago, early evening, outside Wainfleet, a rather weird looking animal crossed the street in front of me. It was in a rural area and it was the size of a large dog and had a bushy tail. It turned its head to look at my vehicle as I slowed to figure it out. I thought it was some weird European dog. It's face really scared me. It looked like a Jersey Devil but also the face looked familiar. Later when I returned home I was googling pics and the closest resemblance was a hyena- looking face. I kept thinking at the time, I would be terrified if I saw it in the woods by myself. I think it must have been a coyote (bushy tail) with some diseased face. I have previously seen coyotes in the wild. Has anyone else seen this thing??

I haven't seen this animal but I have seen a Fox with mange, and it looked weirdly like you described.

I just had one climb the wood fence in my backyard in Beamsville 15 minutes ago!! I was looking at a cedar hedge where one bush was dying and heard rustling behind it, then I saw it as it slowly climbed the fence. I could've touched it, it was so close!! Does anyone know if they return to a nesting area. Because, I don't really want it to. It was mid-afternoon when I saw it.

I walk along parts of the Niagara Parkway where there is bush between the Parkway and the river gorge. I look for deer tracks in soft earth after rains, and today I found feline tracks which seemed to me to be too big for a domestic cat. Possibly a Lynx, more likely a Bobcat.

Wild Cat Lynx?
by: Tiger

3 AM July 5; 2020 observed a large sleek animal passing our driveway. Upon further observation I determined it definitely was in the wild cat family. It paused and looked up my driveway and took a few steps up it. We have had bunnies in our backyard, so I warned my son of the potential danger. I would estimate it was about 60 pounds and somewhat darker in colour. This was in the area of Prince Charles Drive St. Catharines.

Big Grey Cat On My Back Deck
by: Anonymous

I live at Lundy's Lane and Dorchester. I was letting my dog out at 4:45 am and when I opened the back door and turned on the light a saw a large grey cat sitting on a post on my porch. We were 3 yards apart. The immediately started to leave while I was stopping my little dog from going out. I did not notice a lot of details because I was containing my dog but this animal was about 30" tall. When it got down one of its rear paws was still on the top of the deck post while one of its front paws was on the deck (4 ft). I will set up a critter cam.

Hi, my name is Doug and I believe that I have seen a small Puma in the South End of St. Catharines, ON, not far from the Bruce Trail. This animal is about the size of a large dog, she was a goldish colour with black markings around the mouth area, top of head and long tail was black tipped at end also. This I seen could jump very high and run very fast as well while chasing a Jack rabbit. I feel extra privileged to have this majestic looking Cat indeed.

What sound does a Lynx make?
by: Anonymous

I live in Ridgeway (Point Abino specifically). I have been hearing some strange animal noises that sound cat-like to me. Never heard anything like it and it's loud. It's a cry that almost sounds like the animal is in distress but I don't think it is. Short, repeated cries. My dogs ignore most sounds at night but not this one. They go crazy when they hear it. They really growl and bark - totally in defence mode. This animal comes around approx. 4am or so (just like Steve pointed out in his comments). I am wondering if it is a Lynx or Bobcat. I hope to figure out what it is one day and will be careful in the meantime!

Confirmed sighting of a Canadian Lynx
by: Steve

The Niagara Escarpment has been home to the Canadian Lynx for more than 40 years. The Best time to see the Canada Lynx is early in the morning between 5 am and 7 am in the summer season. In the Winter miles away a mere dot faintly seen in the the distance (1 km). Very difficult to find the Lynx in Autumn.
The Canada Lynx can cover 50 km a day. They kill and eat. The Lynx is stealthy and full of incredible power and can leap over a 12 foot fence in the blink of an eye. Stay Safe Always Know What You Are Getting in to, think!

Lynx / Big Cat Queenston
by: Anonymous

I’ve seen it twice now, just as you pass under the Queenston/Lewiston bridge on the parkway, both times it was a rainy night. This time I saw it clearly. It’s head was down but it walked like a cat, it’s paws were huge, and it’s body length was that of a big cat, ears were too small for a coyote or wolf, the tail told me it was neither of those. Heading towards the gorge, on the hunt, further up the parkway was a herd of deer.

My dog and I encountered what I believe was a Bobcat this afternoon (5pm) on the Dofasco 2000 Trail in Stoney Creek. It was following a stream and went underneath the boardwalk. It had no tail, was very agile and quiet. It was a mottled/spotty grey color. I tried to track it with my bins but I bet it was standing still staring right at me, I just couldn't find it. It was about 10 feet in front of us when it slunk out and under the boardwalk and then froze somewhere in the surrounding trees!

I just saw a Bobcat in Brantford, ntario. Couldn't be a Lynx. It walked right in front of my Semi in the parking lot of Aryzta bakery at around 2300 hrs. The hind legs were about the size of shoulders or marginally higher. It was unfazed by my presence or the noise of semi. And sent the plovers flying with their panic calls.
I didn't expect to see a Bobcat in southern Ontario let alone within a city. After reading other comments I am relieved my eyes didn't betray me.

I saw this rather large black (possibly exotic) cat in my neighbours driveway behind my house in NOTL, backing onto the escarpment. He had a very sleek well muscled movements and my daughter and I watched him for a good 10 mins. Oddly enough, my neighbors beside (the cat was behind) dog (lab) was barking and the cat was rather unbothered. Hell of an odd sight. Looked to be about 30lbs or so so with a very long thick tail and smallish head. Took some pics that did not turn out great, but is still obvious that this is not a domestic cat. Happy to post or email if anyone would like to see. Reported to N.F SPCA.

Two Big Cat sightings in Ontario
by: Anonymous

Bobcats are a thing in Southern Ontario. I saw one in the parking lot at the dumpster behind my office last fall. It was right in my car headlights 10 meters away, and stood still for me for about a minute. It was definitely a Bobcat. Lynx I am not so sure. I saw a large cat stalking a domestic cat at about 6 AM up in Marmora Ontario 3 weeks ago. It was bigger than a bobcat for sure, I thought Lynx, but it had that super long, super bushy re-curved tail, with a black brush at the end. WTF? An Eastern Cougar? I hesitate to say, it was small for a cougar, but hey, cougars do in fact start smaller and get bigger with time. The tail was as long as the cat though, and way bushier than a domestic cats would ever be. There have been confirmed sightings of Coigars in the Huntsville area, and a few other South Ontario towns, so it looks like the Cougar in fact returning to the East. I wonder if they are true Eastern Cougars, or if they are Western Cougars who have migrated here?

Lynx versus Bobcat
by: Anonymous

Are you sure you saw a Lynx and not a Bobcat? I believe Lynx range is more north and Bobcat are further south, but the range overlaps a little in the middle. Lynx and Bobcats are almost the same size and both have tufts on the tips of their ears. A good way of telling the two apart is by their tails and hip height. Both cats have short tails but a Bobcat tail is a little longer than a Lynx. A bobcat's back is more level with their hips and shoulders inline but a Lynx back is on an angle with their hips noticeably higher than their shoulder.

About the height of my knees. I will never forget the sighting. It stopped to watch me. Showed no fear of me. Then went along it's way. It was me who was afraid. I stood still and just stared at its' eyes. Breathtaking and beautiful.

Wild Ontario Cats

It was most likely not a Lynx as they are more northern, maybe a Bobcat. (Bobcat and Lynx are smaller that Cougars with stub tails and ear tufts)

The most common sighting in southern Ontario for a wild cat, is Cougar although nobody seems to be able to confirm the many sightings that have been reported in the last ten years - Cougars are much bigger with a long tail.

There has not even been a photograph taken. I have been a volunteer wildlife photographer for conservation efforts for four years now and have never seen any of the three native cat species that live in Ontario, as they area very elusive and shy animals as a rule.
