Grey Wolf in Brooklin Ontario Durham Region

by Ian Monteith
(Oshawa, Ontario, Canada )

On New Year's day we were travelling east on Columbus Road near the Ashburn intersection, when we saw a beautiful Grey Wolf cross the road.

We pulled the van over to the side and looked at it in the farmer's field. It looked at us for about a couple of minutes.

What an experience! I have seen many Coyotes but this is my first Wolf sighting in Durham. It was grey and white and fairly tall and large. We looked at pictures of Grey Wolves on the Net and this confirmed our sighting.

Wow, this was amazing experience.

Thank you for telling us about your experience! I will also post this on our facebook page.

BIG pack of SOMETHING!
by: Melissa

People say coyotes don't travel in large packs. What about coywolves? I heard about twenty different vocalizations ... yips and howls, CLEARLY from Optimist Park in Brooklin around 2:30 am. They were gone a few minutes later, but I noticed something similar a few nights ago. I hope they stay out of the residential areas when I'm walking my little doggy!

Grey Wolf Ajax
by: Anonymous

Saw a huge grey wolf on my home tonight on Shoal Point Rd, south of Bayly in Ajax around 10 PM, it was very dark so I had my high beams on and I saw eyes glint in the distance and thinking it was deer I slowed down cause they like to jump into the road. When I got closer I realized it was a massive grey wolf, definitely double the size of a coyote which are quite normal in the area.

Grey Wolf spotted at Jeffery Street Park Whitby

Saw a rather large Grey with white fur wolf, Thanksgiving weekend. It was dusk and seemed to be chasing a rabbit.
We had four rabbits here all summer, now nothing.

Wolves not Coyotes
by: Patti

We are at concession 3 North Bowmanville, at Liberty. We hear Wolves all the time, people think Coyotes, but Coyotes do not travel in packs. There have been a lot of missing cats in area as well, mine OK. 😞 He was a male cat and so hard to keep in doors. If you listen on line you can hear the difference between Wolves and Coyotes

Two Wolves followed me
by: Oshawa Hiker

I had quite the experience last February behind Durham College. I was walking a popular trail and stopped and when I turned around there were two Grey Wolves that were still just staring at me. I was alone in a forest face to face with two Wolves about 40 feet from me sizing me up. I have an awesome video where you can clearly see them watching me. I didn't know what to expect but once I made some noise they took off. Crazy stuff so close to home. This incident was at 8 am on a Saturday morning.

Wolves in Goodwood
by: Anonymous

I live in Goodwood, Ontario, and the Wolves have been gone for 3-4 months, but last night they were back and they were very close. A pack of them were howling at the full moon around 11:30 pm. They sounded so close I thought they were at my front door. I went out looking for them and wasn't able to spot them.

Multiple wolf sightings
by: Anonymous

I live on Ashburn Rd between Brooklin, Port Perry, and have 30 acres. We have had several wolf sightings this year (2014). The first time was a single HUGE grey wolf at 7am fairly close to the back of our house, near our pond. 6 months later, Mother's Day weekend, my husband and I saw 3 huge beige/brown wolves chasing (dusk) each other in the field across from our house. The next day (mid day) one ran straight across my driveway and across our side field.

I tell this story and people think I am crazy. There is no mistake what we both saw. We have lived here 15 years and have never had experience like it. We actually have a coyote den in our back field and know the difference. The is no comparison. Wolves are HUGE. Thrilled at my experience, and sad that these poor animals have been displaced. Likely due to the 407 expansion and subdivisions taking their land.

Brooklin Wolf
by: Anonymous

Late fall 2011 I was at the south west corner of Carnwith and Montgomery in Brooklin, Ontario when I saw a wolf run down the middle of Carnwith, cross Montgomery and escape down into a ravine on the east side of Montgomery.

Carnwith is the first major roadway south of Columbus Road. I was frozen with fear as I stood with my little Shi Zhu dog looking at this beautiful big, grey, fluffy-tailed Wolf. But I quickly realized that it was even more terrified than I was.

Later I met a woman walking her dog on Montgomery who lives on Montgomery very close to Columbus. She told me that a few days earlier while she was walking her Yorkie along Columbus Road, town workers stopped their pickup truck to warn her that there was a Wolf in the area and she should be careful with her dog.

Her story excited me because then I knew the beautiful creature I saw was indeed a Wolf and not a Coyote as "friends" had told me.

I have seen Coyotes and know the difference between Coyotes and a Wolf.

I treasure my sighting and can understand the original writer's sighting of a Wolf in Brooklin and I'm happy that the Wolf was still alive in January 2012.
