Possums - Barrie, Ontario

by Paul
(Barrie)

Possum in the Snow

Possum in the Snow

I have a Possum as a regular visitor to my bird-feeder. It comes out in day or evening and when I come out the patio door, it generally reacts by leaving the area on its own and waddles off.

Thanks, Paul, for your picture and comments - please tell us more - do you see the Possum during the summer months too? What does he like to eat? How big is he and how long has he been coming to your feeder? Have you ever seen baby Possums? Do you know where he lives - a hole or does he sleep in a tree?

The ones we see here on our farm were living under our porch steps - we haven't seem them for a couple of years, but maybe they will be back one day.

I would love to hear more and so would our readers!

You can read more about the Possum at our Possum Pages!

Definitely in Barrie, Ontario!
by: The Graff

My daughter & I saw one late at night last fall crossing the road, the bottom of Crawford Street, in the Ferndale & Tiffin area.

For anybody who knows the area, that's right next to the Bear Creek wetlands. Also lots of Deer, Porqupines, Raccoons, etc.

I didn't think they would survive the winter, but this was a mild one, so now have to watch for another range of critters raiding my Koi pond and bird feeders!

NATURE! ITS ALL OVER ME, GET IT OFF!!!
[name the character, name the movie]

Thanks for sending us your report - the Movie was Madagascar and it was Melman the Giraffe!

Furless Possum
by: Anonymous

Hi Possum Lovers!

Has anyone ever seen a hairless Possum?

About 2 years ago I was innocently watching TV with the drapes drawn, when a hairless possum-like beast waddled past the window.

It had red eyes and albino like features.

I searched on Google and could not find a single image of this creature.

Has anyone else had an encounter with a hairless Possum?

Possums in Windsor, Ontario
by: Debbie Doolittle

I have 2 Possums living under my deck in the
back yard, a baby and mother.

The baby is so cute, it looks like a gremlin.

I feed them from my dog house I put on my deck.

They eat cat food and dog food, table scraps.

They have been there since last summer.

They are beautiful animals.

King Rat
by: Anonymous

Possum sighting in Mineola West (Port Credit) Mississauga, Ontario.

It was raining and he was in the ditch area across the road from my house.

Reminded me of that Jamie Kennedy exterminator skit about a King Rat.

It looked like a giant rat!

Yes, it sounds like you saw a Possum!

Possum in Scarborough
by: Anonymous

We went outside into our front yard around 9pm on a rainy night. I didn't see him but my wife noticed him right away in the neighbours driveway light.

He paused and look at us and then hid under a car when someone else walked by on the street. He then took off quickly away from us.

He was not very cute and we weren't sure what it was until we looked it up.

He didn't look very healthy and we didn't think they lived in the city.

Probably has lots of competition with raccoons for garbage treats...

My Possum friend
by: DebraDee

I live in Mississauga, in the Mavis Rd / Eglinton area and regularly see a Possum in my backyard.

I think he lives under the deck. My cats just watch it (him or her, not sure). The possum just goes about his business.

I just went outside & it was there. Made eye to eye contact with me then shyly waddled away.

We've had a flashlight on him & you'd think he wasn't aware. I'll try to get pics.

This is my first possum encounter. It's been about 3 weeks.

We've named him Pauly, or is it Polly?

We have a lovely little Possum who has been visiting our back yard this week. I've never seen one before and was surprised to see one in the city.

He's a cute little thing, I hope he can survive the winter.

Another sighting in Barrie

I spotted a Possum tonight as it ran across the street, in front of my car.

Wasn't certain what it was until I checked online ..... but sure enough, it was indeed a Possum!

Saw one tonight
by: Paul

Hiya! I was very surprised to see one in my backyard tonight here in Mississauga ..... It was big, like a cat, light colored and had a long thin tail.

My wife saw it walk past the patio door in the backyard & I saw it in bushes out front - they climb right?

I have seen large "dodo" on shed roof this past year, could it be the Possum?

I recall a photo of a baby "something" my son took in the backyard a few years ago, perhaps it was a possum, I will have to dig it up.

Possum sighting in Mississauga
by: Lucky L's from Mississagua

The Possum on the front lawn was all the talk at our Good Friday family get-together!

It was the first time our family had seen this little (or not so little) creature in Mississauga.

I read on a website that 98% of the Possums in Ontario are in the Mississauga / Etobicoke area.

I had a nightmare about the creature last night.

I hope there aren't more of them around.

uxbridge pudding possum
by: Jane

Went out this morning with the dog and saw something across the street, by the curb. Upon closer inspection I realized it was a Possum. He was very busy eating something, and I was able to get a picture, (which, unfortunately didn't turn out) before he waddled away.

When I was out later I realized he was busy eating a container of choclate pudding. No wonder he didn't want to leave!!!

Possum in my backyard
by: deborah

Today I was in the living room and my dog and my cat were both looking at something wandering around in the backyard.

I put on my glasses and cried out to my husband "What is that?" He looks and tells me it is a Possum and runs to get the camera, but when he got out there the possum had vanished!

We are in Port Perry, Ontario.

Possums in Ajax, Ontario
by: Lynda

We were out walking our dogs a couple of weeks ago and came across one strolling down the sidewalk.

It went up to our dogs just to sniff and then waddled off.

Tonight I saw one at our bird feeder, and it stayed for about half an hour and then left to take cover under our deck.

Possum in Backyard
by: Anonymous

Didn't know Possums came this far north, but discovered from research today that they, in fact, do.

We live in Snug Harbour, north of Lindsay, Ontario, and our neighbour saw one early this morning in our back yard, foraging under a tree.

She said he was there for about half hour.

Our house dog has alerted us to the presence of an animal out back these past few nights by her yippyness.

Sorry we didn't get to see the little guy/girl.

Get out of my Garage
by: Fernando

I live in the North end of Cambridge and had a Possum encounter yesterday.

I had left my garage door open for a couple of hours and was suprised to see this creature later on in the day.

It was not startled at all with my presence, even after gently guiding it out of my Garage.

Good photos and entertaining Friday morning for the kids.

Thanks Fernando - we would love to see pictures of your Possum - you can go to our "Area Animals" section and submit them, and I'll add them to your report!

New friend in my yard
by: Anonymous

I just got a Possum visiting my yard two nights ago and he is back out there tonight, funny little guy and sooooo slow moving.

I will have to take my dog out on a leash now at night and keep an eye out for him.

I have seen them before on the road or up in trees when I am out in the bush, but I live in a village and had never seen one on my property before this.

Something new to learn about!! :)

Possums in Brampton

We discovered two of the little creatures last night on our deck/backyard. I've lived in Brampton all my life and have never encountered them in the "city"

Not sure I like them around - our cat likes to be outdoors in the summer months and am afraid he might run after one.

Possum in Cambridge
by: Anonymous

Wow! I didn't know we had Possums. The other day we had a big Possum walking along on the top of our fence.

It was big so we were wondering if it could be a mother carrying her young.

Anyhow, it was a wonderful addition to the other critter visitors we get and feed. I hope it stays.

Possum Watcher
by: Sue

I live in Barrie's south end. I was going out to get in my car last week and a medium size Possum walked along right in front of me.

He wasn't that big. I put some dog kibble out for him, being it's so cold out.

I don't know if he will eat it or not.

Possums in Caledon
by: Dave

We have had them around for some time now and we have one living under our deck or hot tub, and there is a manic Red Squirrel under the deck as well.

I found the Possum down the window well the other day, he decided he would eat some cat kibble and roast beef before he climbed up the wood I had placed there for him to get out.

He came out on the deck the yesterday and ate some more kibble and bird feed.

His ears are a bit frost bitten and he has lost half his tail, but apart from that he looks healthy and well fed.

I took some pictures of him.

A friend feeds feral cats at his work and there is a kennel for them - he found a cat and a Possum curled up together in it one day.

Possum in Mississauga Ontario
by: Anonymous

January 25th 2011 - I too have a Possum in my backyard.

Last night around midnight I looked out the back window, to see what I thought was a Raccoon munching away on some carrots that I'd put out for the rabbits.

When I looked closer, I saw the long tail and white face and realized that it was a possum.

I have never seen one before and hope that it returns again.

My Little Possum
by: Anonymous

I had no idea Possums lived in Ontario until last night. I live in a subdivision in Orangeville, Ontario.

Around midnight I noticed something eating peanuts in my backyard. I was surprised that it was a Possum.

I opened the door to give the Possum more peanuts and he/she was not even afraid. I hope this little, sweet creature will survive the winter and I hope to see my little Possum again.

I too, have a soft spot for Possums, some seem to do well here, and survive our harsh winters, but I have also seen them with frostbite damage on their ears and tails, but maybe your little critter will be fine if he can find a warm place to spend the winter.

A Possum came out of our garden today, June 2nd 2010, walked over to our bird feeder and then walked away. It was very large. We live in Brampton, Ontario.

There are Possums all over Southern Ontario these days, they may be raising a family in your yard or your neighbours'.
