Possums - Barrie, Ontario

Possum in the Snow

Possum in the Snow

I have a Possum as a regular visitor to my bird-feeder. It comes out in day or evening and when I come out the patio door, it generally reacts by leaving the area on its own and waddles off.

Thanks, Paul, for your picture and comments - please tell us more - do you see the Possum during the summer months too? What does he like to eat? How big is he and how long has he been coming to your feeder? Have you ever seen baby Possums? Do you know where he lives - a hole or does he sleep in a tree?

The ones we see here on our farm were living under our porch steps - we haven't seem them for a couple of years, but maybe they will be back one day.

I would love to hear more and so would our readers!

You can read more about the Possum at our Possum Pages!

We've had a possum checking out the blue recycling box for the past two nights around 8pm. This is in the Letitia Heights area of Barrie. He/She was nibbling on a styrofoam meat tray. May regret it but we gave him some dry cat food tonight which he gobbled down.

First time ever sighting tonight! Dog was going crazy at the patio door and chalked it up to a rabbit we’ve seen before but the commotion the dog was making was a little over the top so we went to investigate! Out from behind the raspberry bush came something that was NOT moving like a rabbit! As it got closer we could clearly identify it as a possum ... not cute in my opinion - could be the tail. Waddled out of the backyard towards the front of the house on Holly Meadow Rd. Happy travels little guy - for some reason I feel our paths may cross again!

Window surprise
by: Peter

Just had our first visit by a possum on our window ledge bird feeder. Never expected one here at Coutnac Beach near Penetanguishene. It was pretty nonchalant as I snapped photos until my dogs spotted it and my flash scared it away. Can’t decide whether it was ugly cute or cute ugly. Reluctant to let the dogs out tonight so I need to research the critter. Expect to see Jed Clampett chasing it for its jowls!

I also can't decide if they're cute or ugly, or a combination of both!

Love the possum.
by: Randi Chikofsky

We are in South Barrie. To date we have had a large possum visiting our back deck and, last night a smaller one was there munching on coconut that I put out. I formerly lived in Maple, Ontario, and we had them on our property all the time. They shared space with the stray cats that I took care of. No problems ever with them. Cats and possum shared space with no issues. No quarrel.

Tonight at about 9.00pm, we were in the kitchen and there was a possum looking through our patio sliding door. I went to get my camera but it waddled off out of range in the dark before we could take a photo. We are in the south end of Barrie backing on to a ravine. This is our first sighting and we didn't know there were possums in our vicinity or even in Barrie!

I live in a subdivision located on the north side of Mapleview and west side of Essa Road. I don’t think I have ever seen an Opossum in Ontario in my 42 years (sadly, only roadkill in Arizona). I looked out the window in my backyard at about 10:00 am and saw it waddling around eating raisins I had thrown out the window. I thought they were nocturnal? This one didn’t look so healthy and had bald patches of missing fur on its back but it was definitely a fair size. It freaked me out a bit. I opened the window and it waddled off into a bush I have in my garden. I saw it again about an hour later but haven’t seen it since. I must admit I opened my door slowly for the rest of the day and looked around before stepping outside in order to eliminate the chances of a mistaken confrontation!!! I guess it’s a combination of a fear of the unknown and the kind of creepy appearance!!! 😳

Accidentally trapped a possum in my garage for a few hours last night. Shovelled the driveway and left the garage door open while I went to get gas for the car and was only gone for 10 minutes but he must have waddled in then, smelling my open compost bucket. A few hours later I went to take the recycling to the garage when I heard him scuffle and saw his giant rat like tail. Scared me half to death. After 20 or so minutes of moving from hiding spot to hiding spot in the garage I was finally able to shoo him out with a broom. It was interesting to be able to see one so close, they're cool little creatures

Hello Marina, you can send us pictures by going to our Possum Page and scrolling down to where it says "Let us know if you spot a Possum" and complete the form and upload your picture. We just saw the largest Possum in our backyard here in Erin, Ontario, last night! (December 9th) He looked like he weighed about 20 pounds easy. He had the distinct features of a Possum but he had such a long shaggy coat on him. He really looked scruffy with that long fur. He stopped and ate some bread I had out for the birds and the bunnies we have here and he waddled away after his snack. We also had a Possum come visit us in our yard in Orangeville years ago. Always at night and he looked much smaller and much more like a regular Possum. But this guy last night he was HUGE!!! I must try and get a picture of him and post it!

Saw a Possum the other day, my cats were all staring out the window so (thankfully) I turned the outside light on thinking it was another cat, Wow! They are big, kinda scared me at first but I love animals and saw that it was just looking for food so I just let him wander around while enjoying his beautiful nature and then off he went. I did a little research on them and found out that as long as you don't feed them or leave food out they will eventually stop coming back but what a great experience seeing a live possum out my back door, kinda hope he pops back one or two more times though so I can see him again before he eventually moves on :-)

I think I have just seen my first Opossum biking home from work a few minutes ago! It came out and crossed the road at the tracks by the Tim's at Big Bay and Huronia and into the Willow Landing schoolyard. It looked white, but the there was no lighting so I could be mistaken. I doubt there are albino possums in Barrie. It's late and I couldn't get a good look, but it had a long hairless tail and quite the waddle, so I will go with possum instead of giant rat. Has anyone seen a white possum in the area?

We live in Springwater backing onto a protected forest and came of the garage this morning to find some very large Possum prints in the snow.

How big do they grow? And would they attack my dog?

Possums grow to the size of a small to medium sized Raccoon and they are unlikely to attack your dog as they prefer to "play dead" when threatened.

My dog was barking quite excitedly for around 10 minutes, treats which usually grab her attention were unsuccessful. Walked to the corner of the backyard and peeked over the fence to all of a sudden be eye level with a possum, startled me quite a bit. The poor guy just sat there as my dog tried to urge him / her to come on over and play, like others said no fear, guy didn't been budge till we had both (after 10 min of chasing her) gone in the house. He used his tail to lower himself off the fence , kinda neat and scurried under the deck where I assume he lives. What's odd is it was about 1:30 in the afternoon and from what I understand these guys are nocturnal .... not to mention its the middle of winter, however were having unseasonal warmth at the moment. I've never seen one before I find them kind of cute.

Another Possum in Barrie

A couple of nights ago I was watching TV when I saw a larger animal going by the door. I thought it was a raccoon but after turning on the light realized it looked like a possum. As I didn't think we had possums in Canada I decided to google it...... low and behold, a possum is living under my back deck.

My question is can this animal cause damage?

They don't seem to be destructive, they just need somewhere quiet and dry, where they can spend the winter. We have one living under the concrete steps at our house, he must get warm and snug under there because he spends the whole winter there - we hardly ever see him the rest of they year, just winter.

We live on a ravine and have many different animals visit our backyard; the odd Deer, many Raccoons, Weasels etc. More recently we have looked after some feral cats (trapped, neutered and released). We usually put food out for them but take it in at night. Before we had a chance to do so last night a large Possum came and enjoyed a real feast. He left when we opened the garden door, but came back shortly thereafter and finished his dinner. We did not see him today but have seen a Possum before on occasion. I don't know where they live, but there would be lots of places in the ravine which is wooded and leads to the river.

Possum on Mapleview
by: Steve R.

Friday evening while driving on Mapleview Drive E. in south Barrie (just past the city limits)a fairly large Possum started across the road in front of me. I came to a complete stop to allow it to cross safely (thankfully there was no other traffic either behind me or from the other direction)and I was able to get a very good look at it as it crossed. Once safely to the other side, he/she paused and looked back at me, almost as if to say "thanks for letting me cross!". I had no idea there were possums in Barrie, but I knew it was what I saw, and I am glad this website validates that they are indeed here in this part of the country. I hope others look out for them, as they sure aren't "street smart"!

Definitely in Barrie, Ontario!
by: The Graff

My daughter & I saw one late at night last fall crossing the road, the bottom of Crawford Street, in the Ferndale & Tiffin area.

For anybody who knows the area, that's right next to the Bear Creek wetlands. Also lots of Deer, Porqupines, Raccoons, etc.

I didn't think they would survive the winter, but this was a mild one, so now have to watch for another range of critters raiding my Koi pond and bird feeders!

NATURE! ITS ALL OVER ME, GET IT OFF!!!
[name the character, name the movie]

Thanks for sending us your report - the Movie was Madagascar and it was Melman the Giraffe!

Am I right, huh? Am I? Did I win the big prize? A Cruise you said?

Furless Possum
by: Anonymous

Hi Possum Lovers!

Has anyone ever seen a hairless Possum?

About 2 years ago I was innocently watching TV with the drapes drawn, when a hairless possum-like beast waddled past the window.

It had red eyes and albino like features.

I searched on Google and could not find a single image of this creature.

Has anyone else had an encounter with a hairless Possum?

I have 2 Possums living under my deck in the
back yard, a baby and mother.

The baby is so cute, it looks like a gremlin.

I feed them from my dog house I put on my deck.

They eat cat food and dog food, table scraps.

They have been there since last summer.

They are beautiful animals.

Possum sighting in Mineola West (Port Credit) Mississauga, Ontario.

It was raining and he was in the ditch area across the road from my house.

Reminded me of that Jamie Kennedy exterminator skit about a King Rat.

It looked like a giant rat!

Yes, it sounds like you saw a Possum!

Possum in Scarborough
by: Anonymous

We went outside into our front yard around 9pm on a rainy night. I didn't see him but my wife noticed him right away in the neighbours driveway light.

He paused and look at us and then hid under a car when someone else walked by on the street. He then took off quickly away from us.

He was not very cute and we weren't sure what it was until we looked it up.

He didn't look very healthy and we didn't think they lived in the city.

Probably has lots of competition with raccoons for garbage treats...

My Possum friend
by: DebraDee

I live in Mississauga, in the Mavis Rd / Eglinton area and regularly see a Possum in my backyard.

I think he lives under the deck. My cats just watch it (him or her, not sure). The possum just goes about his business.

I just went outside & it was there. Made eye to eye contact with me then shyly waddled away.

We've had a flashlight on him & you'd think he wasn't aware. I'll try to get pics.

This is my first possum encounter. It's been about 3 weeks.

We've named him Pauly, or is it Polly?

Saw one tonight
by: Paul

Hiya! I was very surprised to see one in my backyard tonight here in Mississauga ..... It was big, like a cat, light colored and had a long thin tail.

My wife saw it walk past the patio door in the backyard & I saw it in bushes out front - they climb right?

I have seen large "dodo" on shed roof this past year, could it be the Possum?

I recall a photo of a baby "something" my son took in the backyard a few years ago, perhaps it was a possum, I will have to dig it up.

Possum sighting in Mississauga
by: Lucky L's from Mississagua

The Possum on the front lawn was all the talk at our Good Friday family get-together!

It was the first time our family had seen this little (or not so little) creature in Mississauga.

I read on a website that 98% of the Possums in Ontario are in the Mississauga / Etobicoke area.

I had a nightmare about the creature last night.

I hope there aren't more of them around.

uxbridge pudding possum
by: Jane

Went out this morning with the dog and saw something across the street, by the curb. Upon closer inspection I realized it was a Possum. He was very busy eating something, and I was able to get a picture, (which, unfortunately didn't turn out) before he waddled away.

When I was out later I realized he was busy eating a container of choclate pudding. No wonder he didn't want to leave!!!

Possum in my backyard
by: deborah

Today I was in the living room and my dog and my cat were both looking at something wandering around in the backyard.

I put on my glasses and cried out to my husband "What is that?" He looks and tells me it is a Possum and runs to get the camera, but when he got out there the possum had vanished!

We are in Port Perry, Ontario.

We were out walking our dogs a couple of weeks ago and came across one strolling down the sidewalk.

It went up to our dogs just to sniff and then waddled off.

Tonight I saw one at our bird feeder, and it stayed for about half an hour and then left to take cover under our deck.

Possum in Backyard

Didn't know Possums came this far north, but discovered from research today that they, in fact, do.

We live in Snug Harbour, north of Lindsay, Ontario, and our neighbour saw one early this morning in our back yard, foraging under a tree.

She said he was there for about half hour.

Our house dog has alerted us to the presence of an animal out back these past few nights by her yippyness.

Sorry we didn't get to see the little guy/girl.

Get out of my Garage
by: Fernando

I live in the North end of Cambridge and had a Possum encounter yesterday.

I had left my garage door open for a couple of hours and was suprised to see this creature later on in the day.

It was not startled at all with my presence, even after gently guiding it out of my Garage.

Good photos and entertaining Friday morning for the kids.

Thanks Fernando - we would love to see pictures of your Possum - you can go to our "Area Animals" section and submit them, and I'll add them to your report!

New friend in my yard

I just got a Possum visiting my yard two nights ago and he is back out there tonight, funny little guy and sooooo slow moving.

I will have to take my dog out on a leash now at night and keep an eye out for him.

I have seen them before on the road or up in trees when I am out in the bush, but I live in a village and had never seen one on my property before this.

Something new to learn about!! :)

Wow! I didn't know we had Possums. The other day we had a big Possum walking along on the top of our fence.

It was big so we were wondering if it could be a mother carrying her young.

Anyhow, it was a wonderful addition to the other critter visitors we get and feed. I hope it stays.

I live in Barrie's south end. I was going out to get in my car last week and a medium size Possum walked along right in front of me.

He wasn't that big. I put some dog kibble out for him, being it's so cold out.

I don't know if he will eat it or not.

Possums in Caledon
by: Dave

We have had them around for some time now and we have one living under our deck or hot tub, and there is a manic Red Squirrel under the deck as well.

I found the Possum down the window well the other day, he decided he would eat some cat kibble and roast beef before he climbed up the wood I had placed there for him to get out.

He came out on the deck the yesterday and ate some more kibble and bird feed.

His ears are a bit frost bitten and he has lost half his tail, but apart from that he looks healthy and well fed.

I took some pictures of him.

A friend feeds feral cats at his work and there is a kennel for them - he found a cat and a Possum curled up together in it one day.

Possum in Mississauga Ontario

January 25th 2011 - I too have a Possum in my backyard.

Last night around midnight I looked out the back window, to see what I thought was a Raccoon munching away on some carrots that I'd put out for the rabbits.

When I looked closer, I saw the long tail and white face and realized that it was a possum.

I have never seen one before and hope that it returns again.

My Little Possum
by: Anonymous

I had no idea Possums lived in Ontario until last night. I live in a subdivision in Orangeville, Ontario.

Around midnight I noticed something eating peanuts in my backyard. I was surprised that it was a Possum.

I opened the door to give the Possum more peanuts and he/she was not even afraid. I hope this little, sweet creature will survive the winter and I hope to see my little Possum again.

I too, have a soft spot for Possums, some seem to do well here, and survive our harsh winters, but I have also seen them with frostbite damage on their ears and tails, but maybe your little critter will be fine if he can find a warm place to spend the winter.
