Ferrets in Southern Ontario

by Julie Dennis
(Dundas, Ontario)

We live just outside of Hamilton, Ontario, and we live across from a creek and very close to a swampy area and grassland.

The other night at about midnight, my husband saw something that looked like a wild ferret running down the street.

Is this possible? What could it have been?

How interesting! I wonder if what your husband saw could have been a River Otter?

I also researched and figure that what your husband might have seen was either, a Weasel, Mink or Fisher, which typically don't live in Southern Ontario as they are more likely to be found in Northern Ontario.

Or, it could have been a pet Ferret which had been released or had escaped from captivity.

I wonder if any of our readers have seen this animal, or something similar, in the Hamilton area?

Dundas
by: Ryan

I also live in Dundas and have spotted this same thing a couple times....that is actually what brought me here.

It looks most like the River Otter. I have a small stream running through my backyard.

Are they common?

Lagoon City (Brechin)
by: Anonymous

Last summer my boyfriend and I were walking down the pier in Lagoon City when we saw what we thought was a Ferret.

After looking online, I now believe this was a Weasel. They are very similar in looks and I can see how people would confuse them for each other!

Correction - a Weasel, not a Ferret
by: Anonymous

I was searching the internet and I now believe what I saw was not a Ferret but a Weasel.

It only stayed around for about 2 hours and has not been back.

Managed to get just one picture of it also.

Wasaga Beach
by: Anonymous

I just had an all white with a black tip tail ferret come up to me while I was changing the bird feeder.

He is just hanging around the back yard and the bush at the back.

What is a quick way to tell the difference between the ferret and a weasel?

Ferrets in Newmarket too...
by: Anonymous

I also have seen what I am sure is a Ferret in our area near the river also.

I wonder if what you saw might have been an Otter, seeing as it was close to water?

Interesting sighting!
by: Meaghan Edwards

I live in Hamilton, Ontario, and have seen such an animal in my own (suburban) backyard! I believe it was a Fisher.

I understand that with development they've been forced to live closer to human contact.

I hope people learn to coexist with them instead of falling for predator-based scare tactics :(

Me too!
