Coyotes in Mississauga

We often see Coyotes here in Mississauga. We live off Mississauga Road, south of Eglinton Avenue.

Our house, on a ravine lot, has a paved nature trail down the side and around the back of the property, with Mullet Creek (about forty meters away) in the ravine running to the Credit River about two kilometers east.

We see coyotes morning, evening and sometimes during the day. They actually run into our garden, over a half-meter tall fence, jump up onto the stone surround of a fish pond, run along it to the other end then run around the lawn grabbing anything edible along the way.

I've so far failed to get any clear photos of them as they're very skittish.

We've had two cats for many years who spend as much time outdoors as indoors, but have never had any contact with them.

I actually enjoy hearing a group of them at night with their yipping howls - an eerie sound I find fascinating.

Coyotes and your pets
by: Terence J Cottrell

Re. my original article, we are still in the same house and we still have the same cat (one died of old age) now 15 years old and two dogs. The cat, an American shorthair now 15 years old, still stays out many nights in spring, summer, fall and occasionally winter. We hear the coyotes hunting while the cat is out and I go down to let him in and he's always sitting on the doorstep so far. Of course I hate to hear the scream of a rabbit or find bits of fur, but that is nature; if you don't want your pet killed keep it in. The coyotes are still going to kill small animals, that is their way. By the same token I don't like the deer eating my tulip foliage, but it's a small price to pay to see these lovely animals walking by our back yard so nonchalantly.

Coyotes

It's not ok to hear them at night attacking cats and dogs crying to their death while in their own backyards. Have you heard this? I have, three times, behind my house in Lisgar. I can't even put my dogs out, and am terrified to walk them. I feel like a prisoner in my own house!

Careful of your cats

I love to experience wild animals as well. Please be careful with your cats though. :)
