Black Fox-like animal

by Helen Cory
(Ottawa, Ontario, Canada)

Recently while driving near Gowganda in Northern Ontario, we saw what looked like a black Fox. It was not a Red Fox as its legs were way too short and it was a smaller animal.

I'm mystified as to what it could be, as all I can find out about foxes in Ontario is that the red fox has a variation of colours.

Could this be another animal? It had the long thick tail of a fox, but its nose seemed to be a bit shorter. The coat was a dark gray to black ..... no hint of red on the chest as my internet search has suggested.

Anyone have any clues?

Cheers,

Helen

Northern Ontario Black Fox
by: Anonymous

I work on the north shore of Lake Superior for a gold mine on the Paint Lake Road (White River) and we see black foxes nearly every day here in the winter.

They tend to hang around the cookhouse and on occasion they get goodies.

In fact, I fed one this morning, a piece of ham.

They appear to be the same size as the Red Fox, slightly shorter legs, sharp pointed ears and a beautiful bushy tail ..... and quite friendly!

It could have been a Pine Martin as they are dark in colour and Fox size, they have shorter legs with a long tail.

They are part of the Weasel family though.

Silver Fox

It sounds as if what you saw might have been a Silver Fox.

Silver Foxes range in colour from a pale pearly grey-white to almost black.
