Bird with Gray back, head and white chest

by Patricia
(Goderich, Ontario, Canada )

I live in Goderich Ontario. I have a pine tree just outside my apartment. I am fortunate to have many birds visit in the winter and I feed them.

Recently I saw one I had not seen before. It was about the size of a Grackle but, had a 'full sized head'.

It had a light/medium gray back and head and a white chest. There were some white markings on the back.

Would love to know what it was.

Thanks.

Hi Paricia - I'm not sure what that bird could be, but one of our readers may know.

If you know what this bird could be, please comment and let us know.

Shrike

I believe you had a Northern Shrike or Loggerhead Shrike. Both have similar markings, but the Northern is a little larger.

Try looking up a bobolink, this sounds similar to what they look like.

Nancy was kind enough to suggest a Moching Bird. Lookd up a photo and, unfortunately, it is not 'my' bird. Thanks for input and...will keep looking and hoping.

Thanks to Beth for your input. I've looked up a photo of the Gray Jay and it is not 'my' bird. I do appreciate your comments though. Will keep looking! Patricia

Could your sighting have been a Gray Jay, a bird about the size of a Blue Jay but with the colouring you described?

Possibly a Northern Mocking Bird.
