Hawk in January

Hawk with meal

This hawk was observed on January 14th, on the fence between my yard and our neighbours.

The hawk was about 5 metres from the patio door when I shot this picture.

It was eating some small animal - a squirrel or chipmunk?

It stayed there for about 20 minutes before leaving.

Can you identify for me the species of hawk?

This looks a lot like a Cooper's Hawk but I'm no expert.

I will also post this on our facebook page and perhaps one of our facebook followers will be able to identify this bird.

Cooper's Hawk
by: Frank

Your yard bird is an adult, female Cooper's Hawk. Also keep an eye open this Winter for either it or perhaps Sharp-shinned Hawk to visit your yard. Keep those feeders full.
