First Bald Eagle

by George D
(Port Credit, Ontario)

I was walking the dog along our usual route through the Adamson Estate in Port Credit. Looking up I saw the largest bird I had ever been within 100 feet of touching.

Question was, what kind of bird was it? My first thought was a Golden Eagle but no confidence.

The dog got short shift that day as I headed home to the field guide. After some research and balance of probabilities of ranges I decided that it was an immature Bald Eagle.

The proof of the pudding came about three months later when I saw two Bald Eagles within about an hour.

How could I be so sure? One was an immature and the other was a mature with all the white feathers in the right places.

Thank you so much for telling us about your sighting of the Bald Eagles!
