Collingwood Coyotes July 30th, 2011

We saw 3 Coyotes just this morning! We have a small farm outside of Collingwood, Ontario with a 1/2 mile track at the back of the property.

We have a small population of Coyotes living in the centre of the track. Our Coyotes are not shy and in fact we see them almost daily when we walk the track with our dog (on a leash with bells on her collar and a flashing LED light).

We have had two occasions where a Coyote came right up to us and tried to lure our dog, an Australian Shepherd, away and once a Coyote managed to grab her by the throat before we were able to scare him off.

Not only are the Coyotes not shy, but they follow us around the track and often come within a couple of feet of us.

Most are within the 35 -40 lb. range, but there is one very handsome fellow who is much larger and almost looks like he is half Wolf.

We are trying to find a way to live in harmony with our new land mates, but in our experience they can be quite aggressive so we do have concerns for our dog, cat and horses.

Any suggestions?

Maybe one of our readers might have suggestions for you, meanwhile just continue to exercise caution when you are outdoors with your animals.

By the way, you may be right - there have been reports of Wolf-Coyote hybrids in Ontario - Coyotes with a sprinkling of Red Wolf genes!

Coyotes where?
by: Anonymous

Coyotes from my understanding eat rodents and rabbits, I have not heard of any coyotes eating small children.Thank God.

I have lived in Collingwood for 20 years and an avid hiker have yet to see one.

Wolf on dog attack today
by: Anonymous

A friend of ours just shot a 120lb Grey Wolf in Collingwood, Ontario, today when it went after his dog.

This thing is massive and he was chasing his Labrador around his backyard.

Unbelievable.

Lucky that there were no small children around.

They reported it to the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR)

Just lost my Chi Poo Dog to wolf!!
by: Anonymous

Hi there,

I am painfully upset about this as, I just lost my dog to a Wolf last night. I live on Poplar Side Road. They killed my little dog instantly and took it into the bush.

Wolf
by: Anonymous

I found this very interesting as I'm sure I saw a Wolf a few days ago near the Collingwood Airport.

It was just before 6am and I was biking with a friend when we saw it.

It was much bigger than the standard Coyote but it wasn't close enough to say for sure it was a Wolf.

I got a cell phone video which shows the size but too far away for details.

We are in Pretty River, I would love to come by and see your coyotes sometime. Email me if you wish.

YIKES!!
by: Anonymous

Sounds extremely risky to me. I would walk my dog somewhere else and/or somehow get rid of the coyotes - for sure.

Be careful!
by: anon

They are in competition for food. Small pets, farm animals and small children are at risk.
