Baying at the moon

by Kent Hiebert
(Smithville, Ontario, Canada)

My wife and I live in Smithville, Ontario, and are well acquainted with Coyotes, Coy-dogs and Bush Wolves. Their yipping is quite familiar - especially just prior to a train coming by.

However, there appear to be Wolves here as well.

We have heard a mournful baying at the moon more than once. Also, one or more large black canines have been spotted in a pack of up to 8 animals.

This is not typical behaviour for Coyotes - even eastern ones.

The possibility of Coy-dogs cannot be ruled out, however, caution with pets and walking alone is wise.

Thank you so much for telling us about your experience!

Wolf howl
by: Anonymous

Wainfleet Ontario ... not far from Smithville. I have seen a Wolf once here as a teen, nothing since then ... always just Coyotes and their yipping. Tonight though around 11:30 p.m I heard the most mournful, long howl ... the type of howl that makes the hairs on your arms stand on end. It woke my husband out of a sound sleep, he turned and asked me if he was dreaming. I was so glad to know I wasn't the only one that got the privilege to hear it! I'm a little leary for my livestock now tonight, hopefully all will be well.
Just pointing out to anyone that might doubt ... I know all of the dogs in my area and none of them are capable of that howl, I have been in close contact with Coyotes more times than I can count in my life time and that was not the sound of a Coy.

Wolves

Hello, I have also heard howling in the Lincoln area. I checked data base against it and I go with a Wolf. I would like to hear more about it.

Not Wolves
by: Anonymous

There are no Wolves known to inhabit your area. Also, Wolves in Southern Ontario are grey, never black. So I have no idea who would have started this story of a pack of 8 black Wolves ... watching too many nature shows about Yellowstone, maybe. Also, about the howling you heard - a Wolf's howl sounds pretty much like a big husky dog's howl. Other dogs can also sound like Wolves, so if you hear something baying at the moon, it doesn't mean you necessarily have Wolves around.

Attercliffe

I live in Attercliffe about a fifteen minute drive from Smithville. It's a rural spot and over the last 12 years I have seen two coyotes and heard the occasional howling of animals at night. Last night (Saturday May 17) I heard a howling of a very different sort. It seemed deeper, almost mournful. There was the odd firecracker going off and maybe it was was someone's dog but I have never heard that particular howl before.

Wolves in St. Anns Ontario
by: Dan

I definitely saw 4-5 wolves close to the fence around my property this morning in St. Anns Ontario. I've heard them howling at night, especially when a train goes by and whistles. My dogs were going crazy barking at them at 5 am, I went out and was yelling at them, but they didn't seem scared at all. They wandered off after a few minutes.

Great information, I would not even think about wolves around this area.
